Dwarf Player mode
« on: March 21, 2009, 03:31:07 pm »

A detail sugestion, without any priority other than the awesome value. It would be nice if it would be possible to play the game entirely in the dwarf language, It would take some time to get used to, but the awesomeness to be able to read that without a problem when showing the game to a friend will make the whole thing that more awesome, or cement your reputation as a basement lifeform.

Why not just scramble the interface so it's impossibly hard to learn to use? It'd be even more impressive.

It'd be nice if the display and menu text could be modified so there could be various unofficial community translations for people that might not speak/read English well. Though I imagine that might have to wait for the presentation arc when tiles and fonts and everything are separated.

An amusing idea, and I agree that it'd be neat on principle. The main problem is that it would require fleshing out the language (which, at the moment, mainly consists of nouns and adjectives); a secondary problem would be that it'd require internationalizing all of the text in the game (so that it can pick the appropriate words to use in any given situation), which is a huge amount of work.

Of course it'd be a lot of work, but it would be awesome. I doubt i'd use it personally tho. I've had a hard time learning spanish...

But the awesome-level is quite appealing. I'm reminded of the star trek nerds who can speak klingon... (i'm a fan, but i'm not that much of a fan... plenty of better ways to spend my free time)

I immagine this'll be the first translation for DF after i18n gets added ;D

I got the idea from my feeble attempts at learning a few of its words (Bom, Kogan, Usān, lam, ód, and that's it.) It shouldn't be that hard, the menu doesn't change much, and it provides a good base for stuff.
And after all, reading a succesion fort in Dwarf would be rather dwarfy, right?

He suggested it as an option, it's not grognardism.

We tried that. Some maniacs learned to use it anyway.

A problem is that the Dwarven Language has different conventions then the English language that is probably supplimented by body language.

So good luck understanding speach without The, And, Of and any other conjunctions.

Er...I don't think that Dwarven is supposed to be conjunction- and article-less, I think Toady just hasn't bothered with those things yet.

Just make a modular tag that's added to a word to indicate how it relates to another word, the meanng dpends on the order of the words, on which word the tag's been placed, and whether it's in front of the word or behind it. Koganusān (Boatmurdered) would remain the same. While Lam Ód (The stones of tunneling.) could become Čatlam Ód. Same as Bom Kogan (Home of boats.) becoming Atbom Kogan. (Č = the, At in front of first word signifying an 'of' relation from the first word to the second one.)

On further inspection, I noticed the names are now rather similar to 'eat lamb'  and 'at(omic) bomb'. I'm not sure whether or not that's a good thing.

I like this idea.

I'd like to see it combined with 1: A constantly regenerating Fog of War effect that lays a random, false DF map over your real one, 2: Critterized stone-so that you have to fight it, before you can mine it, and 3: A sophisticated piece of hardware designed to kick you square in the nuts every time one of your dwarfs dies.

1. Alter terrain features that are outside FOV on random ticks?
I'd be interested if it was biased somewhat towards things people had told your character in ADV mode - there's a famous swordsmith at the river 3 miles south of a cave outside of town, or maybe in a cave 3 miles west of the river outside of town ... depending on who you ask.
2. While the possibility would be nice to have, I don't want to be fighting semi-invisible monsters that spawn inside the fortress ...
3. Girlfriend not included?
(I just get "THAT game!" & "THAT forum!" ::))

Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.
Wait, what?

1. Biased towards severe epilepsy inducement.
2. Atleast they're only semi-invisible, wait until the air starts seiging you because your dwarfs are breathing too much.
3. Ouch. If that's what you took from what I said, I'm glad I'm not dating *your* girlfriend...

1) Just don't show the map. Make it all black and force the player to memorize his base layout on his own

2) The air won't get a chance when the dwarves' own livers start attacking them from the inside out!

3) They already have it. They sell it along side the Sex Drive attachment for your PC.
