Hey, this is a great idea.  Now all our free time will be directed towards something (moderately) useful.

Well, I can't get it off my mind, I've relented to some brainstorming.  Starting at the basics, I'm trying to think of ideas for units for a VN War module.  Obviously this is more of dramatic interpretation than trying to convert forum drama into a TBT.  I ain't got much so far.

Kerons-
Basic unit is the Keron Squad, three frogs equivalent to a single human soldier.  Because they carry smaller guns, they're less powerful but get off more shots.  Normal squads have MP40-likes, with specialist squads carrying anti-armor rockets, HMGs, or other weapons.  Also have officers, maybe vehicles and such.  The WWII theme is just a special effect.

Penguins-
Function like the Kerons, but more belligerent.  Big question is, are these normal sized penguins, or somehow human-equivalent penguins?  Different squads, with all you damn forumers as heroes and officers and such.

Other People-
The rest of us.  Widely variable, and I don't want to represent anybody wrong.  Give me ideas!  If you don't want to download the program and painstakingly figure out how it works, just interpret yourself as a fighting unit, weapon ideas, etc.  And no, you don't have to be a "Forum Celebrity" or whatever, I'll try to get everybody who wants in eventually.

An important thing to note is that, unlike your standard RTS, the War Engine doesn't track unit types by their affiliation.  There are no "sides" with a repertoire of units, just universal templates, each tracked and editable individually.

Anyone here, place a single Black Templar into your game, and name him 'WorkerDrone'.

You know, for shits and giggles. *Downloading*

Ill help out with the Keronian army, given I was their former leader I know quite a bit about them.

For starters the standard weapon was the STG44, an assault rifle. We also had some light tanks and a few heavy ones, along with a good supply of jeeps and trucks, usually with an MG42 mounted on the jeeps.

Also good guess on the squad of three thing... I usually used them in threes...

Just the pervert I wanted to see.  Questions-

1) I need some good reference pics of Kerons.  Armed or militant especially.  If you've got pics of others beside the five main characters, that'd be helpful.  I considered going to /a/ or /r/, but that'll be my source of last resort.

2) The whole WWII theme was your thing right?  Since this is the VN mod it doesn't really matter how the actual manga presented them, but it'd be useful to know.  I was considering adding the Bandai mecha as units.

3) Come to think of it, you've been making all this up in the War threads haven't you?  I've kinda glossed over/zoned out on most of it.

1. It's hard to find refrence pictures for more than the main characters, so I'm not sure what to do here... Given Giroro and his brother are the only ones commonly carrying weapons...

2. Yeah the WWII thing was me, most of the weapons seen in the show and manga are either gundam weapons or modern weapons given a futuristic makeover

On mecha, I don't think they should be a common unit, more like a rarley seen super unit.

3. Mostly just stuff I already told you... Anyway gotta cut this short (Damn PSP..)

So what, the WWII style was part of the war and so should be left as such, unless you used gundams in your roleplay I feel they should be left out.

Also... Those flappy things the their heads, are those hats or actually part of the Keron anatomy?

Hats, but keronians are never seen without them. They even wear other hats over them.

I'm calling them hats, cause they certainly look like it.  I'm drawing the squads with a hat'd leader and two unhat'd soldiers.  Not that it matters at all, but it'll make them easier to differentiate and recolor.  Okay, they all have hats.  Have to rethink that...

I did just find a Keroro Gunso wiki, but it has very few pictures.

I'm definitely going to give them at least a couple retrotech mecha, in deference to the Silent Storm threads.  And because giant robots improve everything.

Forgot about the zombies.  Obviously have to make zombies - need some extended ideas on that.

PLEASE call them panzerkliens if you do that! I loved that name!

To differentiate between leaders and soldiers the squad leader could wear a different hat over the cap.

Gah, better get back to you in the afternoon. Typing on a psp is annoying.

Sniper - I'll take your consideration in note, but 25x25 pixels isn't much to work with.

Jack_Bread - Thank god you're here, because I need a lot of sprites!  If you want to help out that is.

For future reference to everybody, here's the graphics standards-

All units use two tiled pictures, keyed to the 8 direction movement/facing.  So, an orthogonal picture and a 45 degree diagonal picture.  Units come in three sizes - 25, 50, and 75 pixel squares.  Units can also have two "stances", usually a normal posture and defensive posture, but the two stances can be anything, and need not look different.

There's two important things to know about the unit-graphic-megapicture.  One - The color of the 0x0 pixel determines the transparency color.  Two - the maroon-ish color pattern in the top left is the "default" pattern; in the unit editor, these colors are what remaps to the other color patterns, so make everything can be recolored with that specific pattern, and don't change any of the pallets.

Every unit also has a 100 square portrait picture.  Can be anything really.  These look best with a couple pixels given up for a border.

Each weapon has a 50 square portrait.  Again, borders are nice.

Terrain is made up of 1000 individual 25 square tiles.  They don't all have to be filled in, but the whole picture has to be arranged right to work.

There's also template pictures for the GUI and special effects, but they have to be arranged just right too.

The game only recognizes 24 bit bmps as graphics.  There's no limit on colors, so anti-aliasing is not a problem, but it does screw up editing, especially with the unit graphics if resaved in another format.  If anybody wants to post some graphics and insists on reformatting, please use PNGs to avoid compression loss.
