Cowardly elf...a bug?
« on: March 20, 2009, 08:44:44 pm »

For about the past two years I have gotten a goblin siege every single season. After a while I've gotten used to seeing some of the same old names. My local goblin civ has a bizarre fetish for using elves as squad leaders. I have no idea why.

About three sieges ago, it dawned on me that there was one elven elite bowman, "Something" Dabblefields, who showed up every single time. And yet when the fighting was over said elf was never anywhere to be found.

Two sieges ago I get the "vile force of darkness" message. I look at the gobbos pouring on the edge of the screen. Dabblefields was there. I muck about with a few things, and pause about twenty seconds later to take stock of the invaders. I go over each goblin squad... and again... and one more time. Strangely Dabblefields is missing. He isn't listed among the dead when the fighting is over. Not in a cage either. Odd.

Most recent siege. By this time I'm determined to fiigure out just what the hell is going on. Shortly after the siege message I unpause the game, center the screen on Dabblefields...and wait.

He takes three steps onto the field then promptly runs away, leaving his squad behind. Hmm, well I guess that explains why I never see the little bastard fight.

I should note that I've been having trouble ending sieges. There's always one squad that just will not leave when the rest are dead or fled. I'm guessing that in each case it's been that elf's squad, sitting on their thumbs and hoping their valiant leader comes back.

Well, from what I have heard, an elven siege is generally amounted to a large pack of elves appearing at the edge of the map, and then just chilling there until they get bored. Maybe this elf shares the same common elven aversion to frontal combat?

I think elves, when they seige come into your map ambushing... like an ambush party.

Maybe once they are spotted, they retreat like a Kobold theif or Snatcher. So the elf tries to ambush, is spotted (which is automatically with Goblin seiges) and then he runs off the map.

I guess. I'm pretty sure elf seiges don't retreat once spotted, however...

I've had plenty of elven leaders of goblin squads who acted more or less exactly as goblins do.

Sounds like a bug, maybe. Next time he comes on to the battlefield take a look at his wounds. It might be that he was severely wounded somehow during worldgen and he's trying to flee each time he gets to your fort.
