Author Topic: 3x3 site: volcano, sand, brook, obsidian, forest, plants, no goblins  (Read 3715 times)

I just re-downloaded DF after having not played for six months, and the first world I generated has a 3x3 site with:

 * Volcano
 * Brook
 * Sand
 * Obsidian layer
 * Heavily Forested
 * Thick Vegetation
 * Warm/Calm environment
 * Aquifer
 * No goblin civilization anywhere on the map

This won't work for me at all, but it may be ideal for some people. If somebody can tell me how to find out what the world seed is, I'll post it.

EDIT: Here are the parameters:

The site should be easy to find: just look for the volcano a bit southwest of center.

That reminds me, the site I found earlier would probably go down well for some of the people here.

In addition to the listed rock layers, the non-mountainous area has black sand. It's a calm freshwater marsh.

Edit: Re: the OP: to get your worldgen parameters, hit Escape, then choose to export images, then hit 'e'. Along with the images, parameters for your world will be created; just paste them here, preferably inside spoiler tags like I did. It's also helpful to include a screenshot of the embark location so people don't have to find it themselves.

No goblins, no menace, lots of trees, lots of vegetation, obsidian for weapons, volcano for free smelting...perfect spot for players who want an easy game. Also, since it's all contained in a 3x3 area, it's great for people using older computers who'd prefer to avoid slowdown.

It'd be just about perfect for building that pure glass megaproject you always wanted to make, or just to experiment with various combinations of magma, water, wood and dwarf.

Though I must admit, Derakon's site looks awesome, and I'll probably be playing that one soon.

It's a good map to learn about everything, from pumping magma to the economy, without the treat of stuff knocking down your door and destroying all of your hard work.

Personally, I learned to play the game in a zone with no sieges.  Despite the motto "loosing is fun" I don't find loosing all my hard work to be at all enjoyable.

I didn't move onto goblin infested areas until I was already competent in playing the game without constant sieges.

As LordBucket said, it's a really good zone to handle the dwarves without the world affecting them, really suitable for starting out.

Yes, you will miss the ambushes, you'll never learn how to use less traps effectively, but it will allow you to build in peace. Mega projects are tackled easier without gobbo presence, but I like to wash my stuff with blood, anyway.

The no goblins thing shouldn't be a problem, regen with a new history and see what you get. (Unless it's a really small area sealed off from everything, I haven't looked at it)

If you don't have any danger, how will you learn about fun (losing)?

"Okay, I'm under the aquifer, I can start expanding out now..."
"Oh.  I guess I needed to go one level lower before I expanded out."
---
"I didn't realize magma could do that."
---
"I need how much alcohol for these dwarves?!"
---
"What happened to all my barrels for alcohol?"
---
"Next time, I build doors and lock the guy in when he gets possessed, so he doesn't murder my entire stronghold."

I think there's plenty of fun to be had, even without being attacked.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Thanks so much for this location - now I can finally safely experiment with some things.

Gah, of course. I'd almost forgotten what it was like being unfamiliar with the mechanics of the game. I recall my most disastrous "fun" coming from my first attempt at a sewer system, before I realised that water could flow up. Needless to say, many dwarves became martyrs for science.

Yeah, people forget that even without goblins, there will always be some way your dwarves can all die in a horrendous way.

I'm going to post in the story section what happened.
