State Religion
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:23:00 pm »

You should be able to establish a state religion. The state religion work make the people who practice it generally happier while it would make the people who worship a different religion unhappy. The level of impact would be based on the level devoutness the dwarf has so relatively non-religious dwarf either a member of the state religion or not would be virtually unaffected while the devout members would be affected positively or negatively. The declaring the state religion would require a baron(ness) or higher in the fort.

Civ 4 isn't the only game with state religion. Take EU for example.

However this is kind of important when discussing religion and countries. Historically nations had an official religion. Sweden had protestantism, Spain had catholicism and the Ottoman turks followed Islam. All three fought in holy wars and had a great deal occur involving religion.

Although the state religion in DF shouldn't be towards one god like it is for the peoples. Instead it should be several gods should form a sort of Parthenon. I think Toady has already planned for this when he fleshes out religion though.

Um...I think the word you're looking for is 'pantheon'.  The Parthenon was a building, yes?

And if you want a pantheon that's the official religion, well...that kind of already exists.  It's called "all the gods".  All the pagan or 'other' religions in the world are the demons and stuff.  Also if you look at the legends, it tells you which civilization worships a particular god.

Actually, each civilization has their own god or gods that only they worship.  The dwarves and humans are polytheistic.  The elves are monotheistic.  The goblins worship whichever demon is ruling them.  The Kobolds are atheists.  Personally I think the elves should be animists since they're both nature lovers and immortal, but oh well whatever.

The elves aren't exactly monotheistic -- they believe in a force, not a deity, so it's a bit more like the animism you want, though not precisely (it's the spirit of the forest), or Star Wars before the bacteria worship.   They don't try to talk to the force, anyway, unlike the deity-worshippers in adv mode, and they'd mock anybody that tried (not that it takes much to set them off), though "feeling it" would certainly be fair game.  The force concept is specifically meant to allow supernatural activity without personification, although the random names are sometimes suggestive of a personification.  If the force were to manifest itself in the forest as a giant stag or something, it would be more like a deity, though when I get there, there is bound to be some fuzziness.

If you shot off it's head would it turn into a giant psychotic blob that swallows everything?

Probably. But don't worry, all you need to do is bring its head back.

There should be demigods, like physical beings worshiped as gods, other than goblin demons, of course.  Imagine if Cthulhu was somewhere in the game's ocean...

"The Cthulhu bites you in the head. Your right eye is pierced. Your left eye is pierced. Your brain is badly pierced. The Cthulhu latches on firmly.
You stab the Cthulhu in the 1412th tentacle. The shot glances!
The Cthulhu shakes you by the head. It is torn! Your brain is eaten!"

Cthulhu was taken out (temporarily) be a steamboat.   I think an adamantium longsword could fare well.

How big of a sword are we talking?  The story clearly said "A mountain stumbled and moved" in reference to Cthulhu.
