Having modded out all rock except for Obsidian...

A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES...

Rock.

That is right, there is now a rock named Rock.

Is this normal, and just new to me? Or is this some result of my failmod?

It's probably hardcodedly attempting to put down a sedimentary layer and not finding any suitable rocks.  Try putting in duplicate obsidian entries with different occurence types (there's six of them, I think).

Fact: Microcline, alunite and orthoclase will be hardcoded in DF version 1.0. Prepare yourselves. All will be judged.

Actually, those should be useful by then.  And it's probably a tag on the rock that will be necessary, not the rock itself.

I didn't make it.  And the point is, Toady pays close attention to detail, so those temperature values will eventually be in vanilla DF.

Having modded out all rock except for Obsidian...

Is this normal, and just new to me? Or is this some result of my failmod?
Did you remember to make a new world?

Shit, I can't believe I forgot to ask that.  Yeah, removing all rocks without generating a new world would definitely have this effect.

Eh . . . no.  Removing entries without re-genning renders the save unusable.   It doesn't replace the item with a placeholder.  Trust me, I've done this sort of thing before (with body parts.  Instead of the erased body part being replaced with something like "limb," I could not open the save).

I had problems with the dreaded nullstone back when I was making my simplicity mod (which ended up getting far more complicated than it needed to be).  The fun thing is that you can make invisible things out of it.  The un-fun thing is that it weighs a ridiculous amount (this would be fun if you could drop stuff on enemies, but things don't quite work like that yet).

And yeah, it's just the game trying to create a hardcoded layer type when it doesn't have any types of stone that match that layer.  You don't even have to create duplicate entries, just slap all the stone layer types on obsidian and you'll be fine.

The simplicity mod works just fine with stone, sand and dirt.

It should only stop you from opening the save if the problem is to do with creatures. Same thing happened to me when i made a new creature on one comp, then sent the exe. of DF to another computer (not all the raws etc.) and it kept saying "CREATURE: DEMON_ICE NOT FOUND". Far as i can tell, the raws just give rocks their colours/symbols and layering, makes sense that the game could use a placeholder for something that simple, but not for something complex as a limb, right?
I ain't fiddled too much with the raws, btw, just trying an educated guess ^^

Actually, I tell a lie.  It wasn't just with body parts that I've had save trouble.  Once during an upgrade I left out a weapon - couldn't open the save.  Another time I left out a stone - again, couldn't open the save.
