I use microcline for above ground fort decoration. I quite like the contrast of blue and white.

What is this microline of which so many of you speak?  The closest thing I can think of is microcline

It's better for you to find it on your own.  Try using the "other features" under the search function.

I found my first "special area" last night. :( Lost my legendary miners and several marksdwarves before I got that stuff bottled up...and that was only one special friend that emerged.

If I could figure out a worldgen which would make every single tile a "special" tile(Magma, chasm, Adamantine, underground rivers, aquafer, what-have-you) then I would.  They add excitement.

To me, there's no fun in having a fortress on a solid sheet of ice with nothing but rock and maybe an underground river underneath.  I live for the unexpected and wholesale reconstruction of the natural features to fit my needs, nay, whims.

Sadly, I've never had a fortress reach the level of efficiency and maturity to turn me loose on construction.  The most I've built thus far do include a fully-enclosed "sky tunnel," a magma pool beneath a brook so it wouldn't freeze during the winter and so that in the winter, my dwarves don't get cold from going to my anti-cave-adaptation meeting area, and my favorite, temporary redirection of a river and reclaiming an entire fortress which I'd accidently flooded out and had to rebuild around.

Got a snazzy new meeting room and watering hole drowning pool out of the flooding deal, too.

While it can be annoying in your fortress at the wrong place, it makes for a far nicer looking road to your fortress gates.

This is true. Most of the time it's just ugly though. Maybe a new build option/designation "plaster" could help solve this annoyance.

It's already been suggested and discussed.  I recommend looking at past threads before starting a new one.

My current fort has a river, underground river, bottomless pit, chasm, magma pipe, flux, trees, iron copper and nickel, and (as yet undiscovered) hidden fun stuff. I think the sitefinder even said it had an underground lake but I havent seen one yet so I am not sure.

I can't believe some people can actually leave veins unmined. I'm with LegacyCWAL in saying if I find a vein, no matter what it is, it's getting mined. To me they're like ripe zits just ready to be popped--how can you resist? I also like to integrate them into my forts. Iron vein sticking out of my new housing dept? Voila, new wings for higher income residences.

I meant something in every square(map squares, not grid squares, obviously.  That would be stupid.), not necessarily lots of stuff in my fort, but given the rather impressive list of things in your current fort, I'll be sure to try that setup next world I gen.

No time for gaming right now, I'm behind on school as it is.(Because of gaming...)

I mined my bedrooms into a GIGANTIC HOLE in my current fort, and worse yet in a room intended for a noble, but I've gotten over most of my OCD about this kind of thing because if I'm not going to cheat I'm not supposed to know if there's vanilla rock right where I want to build.

A batman came right up to the opening so I enlisted my miner for a moment and a pool of blood was apparently enough to make it fly off.
It's kind of weird though, after my first immigrant wave ALL of the batmen got names but I can't tell what they killed. Giant rats maybe?

Also: I put a cage trap in front of the wall and took it out hoping to catch some of them... if flying doesn't make that impossible. I've still got a door I can lock if that's the case.
