Info on Animals in Cages
« on: April 23, 2008, 12:56:00 am »

I would like to see an expansion of the cages menu so that when an animal (or animals) is incarcerated within the cage, one can discern the sex of the animal.  Alternatively, allow the user to go from the cage screen to a unit information screen and there display additional information.

I primarily wanted this so I could discern when I had too many males (sometimes even one is too many) in a breeder-cage.  As it stands now, I have to do a cage-dance to determine which animals to remove and which should stay.  Of course, all is for naught if animales reproduce by spores or somehow use the ether to send their seed... erm... moving on...

In addition, I would also like to see some sort of 'corral,' a place where pack-animals and such are allowed to wander about... but can't leave.  When I first considered it, I thought of a static building slightly larger than a seige-workshop.  Now I see it as some variation on a room.  Let the player determine where the walls are or aren't, but require walls on all four sides with a single entrance.

code:

------------
............
............
............
......ooo...
-------o----
.......ooo....

'|' & '-' are walls, '.' is flooring, and the 'o' are the building... or something like that.

I poked through the forums for the first idea, but didn't for the second.  I haven't really considered implementation for either of them,  but the first ought to be the easiest given that it is just expanding the menus a bit.

It is?
Little tip is to use CODE tags for ascii art, otherwise the forum messes it up.
Animals do reproduce by spores currently (or more accurately, telekinetic insemination), but can't you see the sex of a captive animal by 't'-ing over the cage, and then examining the animal directly?

You can achieve something vaguely similar to the corral idea. While it isn't quite the same, the mk3 Pondinator(tm) shown in this thread works reasonably well at keeping your critters accessible but contained.

Of course, explicit buildings would work better, but we use what we have available...

Anyway, it doesn't really matter; animals reproduce by spores. I had a fort where every time the wild horses dropped by, my mare, five z-levels down in my dining room, got pregnant.
