What is the extent of your evil?
« on: March 19, 2009, 01:48:31 am »

This isn't a poll. I'm actually very curious. I spent a lot of time analyzing what I'm willing to do for what price so I could graph things out for the devil if he ever came to buy my soul and I found out something pretty interesting:

I can never, under any circumstances, inflict intentional physical damage on a child with the implicit purpose of doing more harm than good. What this means is that while I'm willing to run indoctrination camps ("There's no need for free will, only my will"), child labour pools ("Work for the greater good of the nation"), and abortion clinics for the mentally depraved ("Statistically speaking, your life would have been terrible if you were allowed to live with a suicidal mother and a drunken father"), I could never possibly bring myself to kill a child for any price.

Yes, I know it's not the most virtuous of traits, but I always considered myself free from needless concepts like children or old people. It's pretty interesting since I can't imagine myself bringing unnecessary harm to a child though I will gladly do so once it enters adulthood.... for a price. Specifically, 1 million dollars at age 19 with a downward sloping convex curve price range over age until the limit of $10 000.

So, what's your extent of your evil? What is the point at which you won't sell your services to do something?

I would not, under any circumstances harm an immediate (Mother, father, siblings, ect...) relative.

Everyone and everything else has a price.

Suppose your family got into a car crash and you were lucky enough to have spent the day playing Dwarf Fortress in your room instead of going to buy new furniture with them. They all get knocked unconscious and none of them are going to wake up soon.

The doctor tells you that your sister needs a kidney transplant because a piece of the windscreen punctured her abdomen and ripped her kidneys to shreds. The only one in your family with a match is your brother and looking for an outside donor is impossible since... well... the odds of finding an outside donor are slim to none for obvious reasons.

It's in your hands. Will you remove one of your brother's livers to save your sister, indirectly shortening his lifespan to lengthen hers?

Replacing a kidney with a liver is not a good idea.

I would gladly take his kindey to give to my sister. She will die without it, he will get a few years chopped off that he'll probably never want in the first place.

I never thought about this. But I'd consider living a life of luxury (which ALL of us here are; we have computers and leisure time) while there are people struggling to survive or get food all over the planet, to be evil.

And yet I keep living the same way. Hmmmm....I think that's the most callous evil most people commit.

I see that Yanlin's argument makes sense,
But, there is no evil I wouldn't do
I even have a list of people I would kill if given the opportunity. My whole family is on that list.
I don't consider myself immoral, just amoral (I don't break rules of morality, I just don't have a thing called morality)
On the other hand, I don't consider myself evil either. I prefer to make friends than unnecessary enemies, I would really like a world filled with peace. If there is a good deed I would benefit from I would do it, but I will never help people I don't like.

your brother's livers to save your sister

Multiple livers? He must be a Dwarf. As long he doesn't drink alcohol for the rest of his life, he'll be fine.
Wait... what have you done?

I could kill anyone and not feel guilty about it, even my own family.
Killing a child would be easy for me, but I would want to torture them first, make them beg for death before I let them leave this world.

Needles in the eyes, thermite burning through their belly, mutilating, anything is A-OK with me. ;D

The most evil I could achieve would be wishing misfortune upon those who have wronged me. I cannot see myself killing, as every time I visualize such an act(revenge, defense, etc) I chicken out in my mind. If somebody is going to harm me or my family, then at best I'll wound them severely. Make their arms and legs unable to move because they have knives in them. Stabbing them in the gut? No.

I would not inflict needless pain upon others. The above circumstances are the only situations where I will inflict pain, if only to immobilize.

Alas, I cannot bring myself to do such things. I'm sure given a gun and somebody with the intent on inflicting harm upon others I would shoot to kill, but only if it is a frantic situation where wounding is impossible.
