They just have a fobia for dead things that might come alive and jump at them. It doesn't affect them if they saw it die, but when it gets out of sight(traded) for just a few seconds, there might be a risk of a necromancer working his magic on it in their absence.

Haven't you ever read The Giving Tree?  All elven trees are like that.  The trees give and give and give and then the elves sit on them.

The logs aren't meant to be mutilated! They are companions! A part of nature you take into your muddy little holes with you so you can keep in touch with nature.

But, I guess I should've expected your kind to be a little... shortsighted in that regard.
