Random critters could be handled by creating alternating "magma man" pieces owned by either player, every ten turns or something.  They're unpredictable enough.  Heck, you could say "every 10 turns, each player spins a wheel and adds a fireman/olmman/elephant next to an appropriate terrain feature at the location of their choice".

Are we doing event cards? If we are, one reading 'WELCOME TO FUCKING BOATMURDERED, HOPE YOU LIKE MIASMA' must exist, each play is able to play 2 elephants on any wilderness tile they desire, and a few random units near the mountain are lost to a magma flooding.

I've played quoridor. It's kinda fun, and you could make a pretty cool DF board game off of it.

Start with a grid of rooms with passages between them, and take turns placing either a wall/door or a unit. Once everything is placed/claimed, you can start hunting each other down through your newly created labyrinth...

Where's the magma? Or Olmmen? Or GCS? Or, hell, I dunno, skeletal carp?

I really like the concept of having both above and below ground locations for each tile. And 'buried treasure' and such makes the exploration element very interesting.

Is there any particular theme within DF that you are trying to emulate?

Depending on how light/heavy you want to go, I always enjoy at least some resource management and it seems a straight fit for the theme. You could have both material and man..  er, dwarfpower as manageable resources.

One other thought I had,.. make the setup of the game reminiscent of the Age of Myth, Legend, Heroes..  Flavor can lend to gameplay, and if nothing else I think it would be neat. :)

I'm mostly just trying to invent a boardgame that my wife and I can play together.

She's amazing at any kind of strategy boardgame, so I want to come up with something that's complex enough to be interesting for her, while still being reminiscent of games she already likes, and simple enough for us to play together, without leading to bickering (always something to be cautious of, I find, in a relationship).

How about adding in Lux Delux?

Command of areas, you get resources, control a region get a worthwhile bonus.
Have a large enough army, you get to rape enemy territories, or you start setting up a turtle.

Get a region, get a special card.

And you could add other elements.

Not bad, Foa...Not bad at all. Maybe call region specials 'biome bonuses'?

Biome bonusses:

Beach(ADDON TOKEN TO OTHER BIOMES): + Ample soil and sand for stockpiles and glass, abundant fish including lucrative mermaids if you make a big fort, no carp.
-The occasional big sea fish, aquifiers (Lets keeep it simple and say this means no stone at all), salt water.
Effects: good supply areas, good staging grounds, a farm card is vital here.

Desert: + ample soil and sand for stockpiles and glass.
-scarce water, few ores.
Effects: Same as beaches, only not as good.

Swamp/forest: + Ample wood, water common, decent amount of soil.
-Few ores, elves, it sometimes has rivers, thus carp.
Effects: very common, not many special uses

hills(OVERLAY TOKEN): + more ores than biomes without hills (Mountains are an exception).
-Somewhat more dangerous wildlife.

Mountain:+More ore.
+- Extra z level, cave features, very variable.
-most dangerous wildlife in existance other than carp, HFS has a chance to instantly make a player lose the game when opened.

Something like this?
