Dwarftego, a DF inspired board-game
« on: March 17, 2009, 04:21:45 pm »

So I'm thinking about making a boardgame that's inspired, in part, by DF and Stratego.

I haven't done a boardgame in a while, and this seems like it might be a fun concept.

I'll post the results here, when I have any.

THE CAKE IS A SPY!

Maybe an immobile unit called a Magma Tube that randomly (dice controlled) kills of a unit next to it every once in a while? (Fire men FTW.)

This probably goes without saying, but boardgamegeek.com is an amazing resource for all things boardgame.

Probably already stumbled upon it, but if not it could be a great source for inspiration if you haven't.

Good luck! Looking forward to the ruleset

OH!  Input time!  Is the plan to go with something more Stratego-inspired or Warhammer-inspired?  As in collectibles or a prepackaged style.  Going with Warhammer style also adds in the whole dice stuff too, which can be a pain, but can also add in fun with the randomness of the dice.

Maybe you could mix the games of Stratego and Quoridor (an awesome wooden boardgame with really simple rules but is extremely deep in strategy).  Anyway, what if you had a whole bunch of tiles that represented the underground and you had to make paths to different mineral resources.  It could be called "Strange Mood" and you'd have to avoid things like Insanity: You took too long!  or Berserk: You took too long! or HFS: You and everyone else burn to death unless there is a marksdwarf in your section of the fortress!  Actually, this is an awesome idea.  If you don't like it, maybe I'll try to make something.

Well, I've decided that it'll be more of a traditional board-game, than a war-game, and that the board will be 24x24, so pretty good sized.

Atleast in the center of the board (maybe 16x16?), each space will be occupied by a tile with a surface side, and an underground side. The outer tiles will be wilderness tiles.

It'll be goblins vs dwarfs, and both sides will have allies, and special abilities. There will also be hidden monster lairs on the board, that'll produce special monsters, dangerous to both sides.

There'll be 6 hidden gem tiles on the board. Capturing all 6 will mean victory. There will also be hidden iron and gold tiles, with maybe some extras there.

So far, that's as far as I've gotten, other than that I want to build the board and the pieces out of wood, eventually.

You pick a card, it reads;

Cat-explosion, your fort gains +1 Defence and 2 meat, but has to skip the next turn.
