Logic behind computer viruses
« on: March 17, 2009, 10:40:11 am »

Ya know computer viruses? I always wondered why those exist.

From what I can tell, there's no profit to be made from making them and infecting innocent people's computers. Unless there are some programmers out there that are churning out computer viruses just to be douchebags.

Is there something I'm missing?

They steal your processing powers and allow the hacker to put it to use on more lucrative security cracking, without revealing his own IP.

Yeah, there are people are out who make viruses because they can. And their thought process is "If you get infected, you deserve it for being a moron".

Personally, I think these people deserve to be sentenced to a few hundred hammerstrikes.

Yeah, these are the people I'm talking about. it's probably a crime to make malicious viruses, but I'm not if it's enforced.

Yeah, the logic is about the same as graffiti taggers, spit bombers, or other such punks.  They do it because it's fun for them, and if you don't like it, too damn bad for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As for sentencing, I'm partial to Ebola AIDS Herpex.

Sounds good to me.  I lost some truly irreplaceable artwork (a nearly-complete novel and 13 Doom Wads) that a lot of the bloodthirsty fuckers on this forum would have appreciated, thanks to a virus.

It said on the TV news (so take it with a grain of salt) that the virus in question was created by a kid who wanted to drum up some business for his family's computer repair shop, and he didn't know that it would get as big as it did.  I would cheerfully tear his guts out with my teeth.

Its not that its not enforced, its just that its almost impossible to catch an experienced hacker, same reason why Piracy is on the rise.

The power of the internet is that information can go from anywhere to anywhere.  Which is great for the availability of information and the creation of awesome niche communities.  But for tracking the path information took...

Piracy's on the rise cause of friggin stringent Copy Protection. Just look at Spore. Had a 1:1 purchased-pirated ratio.

It's on the rise, but not because of Copy Protection (IMHO). Most piracy is people who want the game, and either can't afford it, don't want to buy it, or it isn't being sold anymore.
