I wanted to drop a massive block of stone, but when I triggered the support nothing happened. It could be a bug, or it could be I just missed something, any ideas?

I don't see anything obviously wrong, unless of course you forgot that you turned cave-ins off awhile back. :)

In any event, your idea, while nifty, wouldn't have worked. I saw a video of someone digging out their entire (2x2) embark site into a similar giant disconnected block, and when it dropped, it didn't crumble into its constituent parts. A bunch of dwarves died (but not all of them!), and it cracked in two, but that's it.

Oh, right, yeah, you can turn off cave-ins, that sounds like something I would have done, I did spend a fair while in my init trying to improve FPS, thanks!

If you're in a helpful and selfless mood, you can retitle this thread to something like "Not a bug, please ignore."

yeah, I was just going to check on it. Hmmm, upon review, this does not seem to be the case, it looks like cave-ins are on...

Use these options to remove features from the game.  Permitted values are YES and NO.  Removal might speed the game up in the case of temperature and weather.

[TEMPERATURE:NO]
[WEATHER:NO]
[ECONOMY:YES]
[INVADERS:YES]
[CAVEINS:YES]
[ARTIFACTS:YES]
[ZERO_RENT:NO]

Level 9 on the DFMA, right side of the "obelisk."  Looks like you've still got a floor tile connecting it.

Ouch, that's a pretty nasty bug, good thing it is in my mind, I am not sure how I could cope if I couldn't destroy entire mountains with the flick of a lever...

Of course, levers are kind of lame, I really need to link it to a pressure plate set to trigger on vermin...

P.S.
Yes, that ws the problem, thankyou very much!
