Computer won't connect to the Internet for some reason
« on: March 16, 2009, 05:37:43 pm »

My right-hand man recently built a gaming computer.  However, the Asus motherboard he used had some kind of feature that allowed it to easily and automatically download BIOS updates from the Internet.  As it turns out, this makes the computer vulnerable to a truly heinous hardware-attacking virus that Avast tells you about but can't stop.

So he sent the destroyed motherboard back to the manufacturer for a replacement.  Once he got the new motherboard, he installed it and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP.

Everything appears to work except for the Internet.  The computer will connect to his DSL modem, and the modem has the four lights on top indicating a good connection to the Internet and a connection to the computer, but the computer acts like it's not connected to the Internet.   The network icon appears down at the bottom right in the taskbar and indicates a 100 Mbps connection, but the computer acts as though it's a network connection and not an internet connection.

Anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

Enter "ipconfig /all" into a command prompt and post the results.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Well, as it turns out, I just went over there, and he bought a PCI networking card and installed it, and now his Internet works fine.  I guess this means that the motherboard's got a bad networking port or something?

Thanks for the help that you would have given me, Vucar.
