Toady is specifically breaking saves for the next release (ignoring 40d10, which is just an intermediate graphics performance and input release).  He tries to do so as rarely as possible, but every now and then, it has to happen.  So he is taking his time, trying to add in as much framework as he can so that for future releases he can avoid breaking saves while still being able to add a lot of features.

For those that would like to keep playing with older forts, you can always keep the old version of DF around for that fort. Just make a new folder for the next version of DF.

Mind you, by the time the next version is out, you'll probably be bored and itching for newness.

I wonder how many über-hospitalforts will be made within the first week of the release of the next big update...

I just worry about what will happen when a dwarf with the new medical skill falls into a macabre mood.  :o

Urist Scrubswearer looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!
Urist Scrubswearer has claimed a field hospital!

Urist Innocentvictim: "Hey, that's my broken leg- AAUGH!"

Urist Scrubswearer begins working furiously!
Urist Scrubswearer has crafted Muchbloodloss the Consequences of Sparring, a dwarf bone splint.

Urist Scrubswearer: "Where's the guy who needed the splint for his leg?  ...Oh.  At least I'm a legendary Hospital Receptionist now."

Muchbloodloss the Consequences of Sparring is a dwarf bone splint.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  This object menaces with spikes of dwarf lung.
On the image is a picture of a dwarf in rock salt.  The dwarf is on crutches.

It's called backwards compatibility.

Forward compatibility is like making a game run on a current game system but also making able the engine and software to run on a yet-to-be-released system.

It's called backwards compatibility.
Well, the OP's specifically talking about the saves, so the concept of up/forwards compatibility is perfectly valid.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

Whether you're talking about backwards or forwards compatibility, my point still stands: It's not called "upwards" compatibility.

I don't know.  Google returns nearly 5,000 hits on that phrase.  And it seems perfectly reasonable that the phrase used in some other languages to mean that concept literally translates as "upwards compatibility" not "forwards compatibility".  So who cares?

Incidentally, misspelled topics still bug the hell out of me.

Google also returns 356,000 hits for "compatiblity" - Just because a lot of people misspelled something doesn't make it correct language.

So while we're on the subject of the thread title, nobody's going to mention Upwarts?
