How to get fishies?
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:39:13 pm »

I recently lost all the carp I had set up in breeding tanks due to airdrowning, and now no dangerous fish will protect my underwater fortress. Can you trade for fishies? Can you edit the RAWS to get fishies without a regen?

WE NEED DAAAAANGER!  :P

Not LIVE fish. Dead ones, sure, but no live ones.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

You can smelt their meat or leather, or bones... no live fish.

Well if anyone would bring "living" fish for trade it would be the elfs. But they would bring them in cages without any water.

you can definately smelt living creatures, including megabeasts. ive never tried, but im sure this extends to fish, you would just need the workshop in shallow water or if that wont work, flood it immediately after the creation of each fish. if your smelting fish, why settle at carp? go sharks ftw. bigger and more damage.

there is stuff about smelting various animals including goblins in the world of traps and attractions, http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=25429.390;topicseen

i think though you need to destroy your smelter with a cavein to free whatever animal is inside it though.

There's something to be said about a game where people are having a straight-faced discussion about smelting fish and the logistical problems that come with that.

I just tested this with GCS.  I deconstructed the smelter manually instead of using a cave-in.  Sadly, the result was a vermin-type GCS.  It produced webs and it was tame, but that's about it.

This is what I put in the raws for the product:

Yes, it is well known that "smelting" creatures produces weird, vermin-sized versions of whatever you tell it to make.  Mainly because vermin are objects that act like creatures, instead of actual creatures.  Just not possible to make full-size animals.

Well, is there any way to mod an existing creature (such as maqaques) to be amphibious and fish-like, and then make them fully fish-like once they are in water?

Possibly; my guess would be to replace the macaque data with the carp data after making sure the macaque is in water.

Dump it in water, save, mod, reload.

sounds good, but I'll need to finish my monkey breeding program. (I have 8 adults and 3 children, but I'll need a larger scale one for the lake I'm building.)

Will they be able to be turned hostile though? my monkeys are currently tamed.

No, I don't think they can be turned hostile.
