Boiling/Freezing Leather/Meat : A Glitch.
« on: March 15, 2009, 10:36:21 am »

Ok, so heres the story: I'm running a fortress, nothing too special, just an average start off. Its mid-fall, and the caravan has just arrived, thus I am scrambling to get the goods in place and my trader there. Now, I'm designating a channeling job when I get notified that my trader has frozen to death! So I scroll over to the Trade Depot and...

EVERYTHING HAS BLOWN UP!!! There was boiling leather all over the place, half the caravan has been destroyed, and the traders leave in anger. Furthermore, my woodcutter freezes to death trying to haul my mason to a graveyard!

The weird thing here is that I had other dwarves outside, and none of THEM blew up or froze or whatever. Furthermore, one actually took something from the wreckage and didn't die, so I doubt it had anything to do with the weather. I just can't understand it, what happened?!

Flaming Booze happened.
But seriously, if there was booze there and it caught on fire, you are screwed

How would the fire have started though, as I walled off all access points to the magma pipe? And it said the dwarves FROZE to death, so I don't think it could have been a fire.

It's simple. The videogaming gods hate you. End of story. :P

This exact bug happened to me, except mine was at game start.  There would be 1 piece of boiling leather directly on top of my start square, and 1/2 the dwarves would instantly freeze to death (by frame 2).

I fixed this by replacing the data directory.

Also, this happened in Ubuntu.

Then you see the heroic dwarf carrying your mason from the flames all heroicly and shit. Everything on fire. Shrapnel everywhere

I think there would be flaming booze everywhere not shrapnel. Other then that, that was an accurate picture of what happened... only the heroic dwarf blew up as well...

Were you using any utilities? Some utilities can mess up tiles, such as setting the tile's temperature to 0, in which case anything entering that tile instantly freezes to death, for example.

For me, the problem was trying to use the graphics sets provided for the orc race.  I used The Gimp to save the image as a 24 bit bmp.

I am a little confused about that though.  The instructions on the wiki specifically say a 24-bit bmp is required, but the game comes with a png (people.png I believe).  Outdated instructions?

Maybe something exploded, blew your dwarves' clothes off, caused them to freeze to death, then scattered everything around?

I think I fixed it, the problem was my game kept loading my old, screwed up modding attempts, which coupled with me uploading the orc mod, caused me to have TWO orc creatures, which reverted the playable civ to armored war elephants (?), essentialy screwing the game up. For example, on embark I had a meat called < meat> that was worth 0 points, and that when I embarked with it, it instantly blew up.

Yes, they are outdated as the new engine loads PNGs instead of BMPs.  Since it's not "official" yet, it probably hasn't been updated.
