Top of screen cut off
« on: March 14, 2009, 07:09:24 pm »

Hi there,
I'm a total newbie to dwarf fortress, was going to work through the tutorial at http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/

but whenever I tried starting the game, it seems as though the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the screen is cut off. The bottom part of the screen is black. I attempted to lower the resolution to 800x600 in the init file but that did not change anything. I also attempted to change the default to fullscreen instead of windowed mode in the init file but I just got an error message. Any  help would be appreciated :]

I am using an Asus Eee PC 1000HD running WinXP

Init settings! Please. Really, just the part between "This lets you set the starting windowed/fullscreen setting.  Can be YES, NO or PROMPT." and "Change this to YES to keep the DF window on top of your other windows."

Yeah, you've got a problem there. We have had total newbies to DF state that the top of their screen was cut off when they were really just seeing the normal DF screen.

You screwed up the init.txt . Good luck fixing that sucker.  It shouldn't be too hard, and you'll figure out how to use character sets.  Try the wiki.

Okay here's what you need to do to fix your problem.

First, write down your vertical screen resolution.  If you are planning on using DF in windowed mode subtract 64 from that number, for full screen use the base number.  Take that number and divide it by 16.

Now go into your init.txt file. It is located in /Dwarf Fortress/Data/Init/  Scroll down to  the entries [GRID:X1:Y1] and [FULLGRID:X2:Y2].  X1 and X2 are probably 80.  Replace Y1 and Y2 with the number you calculated earlier.

Save, restart Dwarf Fortress, enjoy.
