Exploratory Mining Style, What's yours?
« on: March 13, 2009, 12:05:29 am »

I dunno if there's a universally accepted method for looking for ore (while not cheating) but I thought it'd be nice to compare and contrast our different styles and find the one that works the best.

Anyway, here's mine where O is dug out and X is revealed and U is not revealed

O X X U X X O X X U X X O
X X U X X O X O X X X O X
X U X X O X X X O X O X X
U X X O X X U X X O X X U
X X O X O X X U X X O X X
X O X X X O X X U X X O X
O X X U X X O X X U X X O
X O X X U X X O X X X O X
X X O X X U X X O X O X X
U X X O X X U X X O X X U
X X O X O X X X O X X U X
X O X X X O X O X X U X X
O X X U X X O X X U X X O

The square is just one of many others that join together in a checker style with each piece rotated 90 Degrees. I like this method because I feel like it reveals the most with the least amount of effort except it's a real pain to designate these because they're all diagonal. If there's a similar method that's easier to designate I'm all ears  ;D

I'm thinking of using a similar style, but using the mouse to designate :P

Since I usually embark in mountain biomes, I don't think I've ever actually had to do exploratory mining. But really, I'm a bit of a "MINE OUT EVERYTHING" kind of guy. Given the choice I'd probably hollow out an entire mountain and leave only a thin shell on the outside.

Same here.

Same here, but I would mine out the outer shell as well.

I would find a way to fill the shell with magma. Best case scenario, it hardens and leaves a new mountain that will confuse geologists for years to come. Worst case, somebody decides it's a good idea to mine there.

Best case scenario would be a fire snake burning up all the booze, and consequently, all the dwarven population.

Years later, archaelogists would be stumped about all the ruins.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What, using a hapless hunter as a pick? I know crossbows are pick shaped...but seriously.

Well, let's just say he went down the wrong way and found himself in the middle of a wolf pack. I think they took his xCow leather thongx.

Is there a reason why you're doing more work than you need to? Other than tormenting the dwarves I mean...

I hollow out the map and rewall when I want contained rooms. I engraved one of my first forts, and got sick of it when I couldn't tell my live dwarfs from the engraved faces.

Seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

I tend to draw squiggly lines with mouse so it looks a bit more like it was just mined out randomly.

Just like it better that way.
