Looking for a Space Exploration Game
« on: March 12, 2009, 06:29:56 am »

I used to love games like Privateer and Starquest (when not paying attention to the main storyline).  I liked exploring, mining, trading, etc.  I did not enjoy combat all that much, although those games did not make the combat too combat simulatory.  Later, PC space games became so combat focused.  Sales crumbled.  And we no longer have the space exploration sims.  Unless there is some out there that I do not know about.

Does anyone know any good games like I described?

There's Freelancer and X3, if you like both good game-play and graphics. If you do try Freelancer, I'd suggest the Discovery mod, it has a vibrant online community and it is pretty awesome overall.

There's also a decent ASCII copy of privateer, called Privateer: Ascii Sector.

I've looked at Freelancer before.  I guess I will buy it now and download the Discovery mod.

X3 is having a new release (already available at Steam) in April.  The reviews seem to be the same for Terran Conflict as it was for its predecessor, Reunion.  I might wait for the price to go down or just buy Reunion.

Thanks for your suggesetions.

Any other suggestions?

transcendence maybe... but its pretty much combat oriented (as is the x3 series. at least you can go excessively mining and trading in x3.)

Ye olde Microsoft Space Simulator was just exploring. I think it's available free, too.

I have X3: Reunion. From what I've read on the forums, not only are they different games, but Reunion is better if you want to fly about killing things alone in a fighter that shouldn't really be killable alone in a fighter. With the X-Tended mod, Terran sectors are added, along with many other sectors, and basic capturing of enemy ships with marines. I haven't played it very much yet, as I accidentally built my factories in a rather bad spot, and need to restart.

TC is apparently buggy right now, with more AoE weapons (Allowing the AI to hit the player more easily), boarding pods built into the game, missiles that are actually worth it to use, etc. Reunion was only $10, so I bought that instead.

The X games are slow-paced, but I find that they have a nice feeling of accomplishment (Finally got my first self-sustaining factory set-up!) For bonus happy-fun points, cleanse the universe of all the other races once you're rich.

Ive been playing x3:reunion for quite some time; I thought missiles were always useful.

What really really pissed me off was how sloppy it was programmed: it had performance issues when it shouldnt and nobody was able to put the finger on. In some areas it was great in others it was horribad.

Same with the friggin voicefiles (i dont know about the english version, but since the original is german anyway...), they had one good voice actor and one bad. In the middle of the production they werent able to afford the good one any longer, or she got sick or somehting. its weird like that throughout the game.

It goes from good to horrible so quickly its not pretty anymore.

And the mods of their forums seem to be idiots  ;D I asked for help there once, and they told me to update my directX, which was in the newest version.

"but there is a 2004 file in there"
"dude, that's because the newest version of that file is from 2004" -.-

and so on and so forth

Graphically, Transcendence would be what I would like.  It isn't 3d space flying, which I did not like the transition to.  Unfortunately, it appears to be all about fighting and guarding transports.  None of the fun elements of exploring a new planet, mining, and trading away the goods that you discovered.

The Microsoft Space Simulator is not really a game.

Like so many genres of gaming, the space games moved away from good gameplay to neat graphics.

Starquest?  Did you mean Starflight?  Because that was the best universe you could fit on two 5 1/2" floppies.  Also, the sequel.  Yes there was simple combat, but you could quite happily just explore the massive universe and find alien races to trade with and new worlds to colonize.  Also, mining and stuff.  I grew up on that game.

Whether you like combat or not, Star-Control 2 (or the free clone, Ur-Quan Masters) is an excellent space exploration game.  The combat might bug you, but you'll get thrills out of the exploration, and chills out of all the mysteries (like, just what did happen to the Androsynths?)

You're probably already familiar with Noctis IV, which is a very love-it-or-hate-it game.

You were right.  Starflight.  Oh, the fond memories.

I've tried Ur-Quan Masters.  I had to fight (and die) way too much.

And Noctis IV is not really what I am looking for.  I tried that game a while back.  I like more a game to the games I play.

What is Core Exiles?

Core Exiles is a PBBG based Epic Space game.
I might be off here, but does this sentence REALLY translate to "Core Exiles is a persistent browser based game based epic space game." ?!?

I thought that sentence was rather strange, especially sine I had no idea what PBBG meant.
