Author Topic: My magma mist trap is almost complete... but now I've run into some problems  (Read 4086 times)

I need bauxite!  There's none to be found on my current location, and it doesn't seem to be able to be brought by the humans.  Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but the last liaison from the dwarves went crazy [there was a prolonged seige and I guess he didn't like staying inside].

Is there some way to bring him back to life so that I can discuss what I'd like to trade again?  On the civilization screen currently there is no liaison displayed.  Other than that, is there an alternate way to set-up floodgates for the magma trap [I don't have access to adamantite :( ]?  Maybe as a last resort... is there some method to hack bauxite stones into my fortress?

(Wooden) Screwpumps that are isolated from the magma will run quite a long time just fine

Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall
 Channelwithmagma  Pump ->  Output
Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall  Wall Wall Wall

Also bridges can serve as one time floodgates and you can later stop the flow with water if needed (obisidan the lava/magma and then build another one use bridge, remove magma)

You can also export bauxite from the trader - if they have it (request it)

Could use some metal material, like iron, instead of stone. But if you can't find any magma safe materials then have some water ready to cool down the magma after your one time floodgate is used  (as the flood gate and mech stuff melts) then just mine out some of the obsidian ( bonus ) make another floodgate and channel out the last obsidian blocking the magma.

Use pumps instead of floodgates, with your magma-trap switch toggling the gear assembly powering the pumps.
Note that wooden pumps will catch fire when used to pump magma. Anything else will be fine, though I use iron and nickel anyway.

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

Using pumps, as long as the back tile (the one that can be pathed through) is not submerged in magma, they won't melt or burn, even wooden ones.

Stonewise, just go into your raws and boost the melting point on a few stone types. Considering most of the values are wrong anyway (they're almost all the same generic value), it's not even cheating.

we can call it fixing if anyone got to much time over then he could write the exact melt point of dwarf fortress stone and real life and compare.

Use dtil to change some useless* mica or orthoclase or what-have-you vein into bauxite. Or even better, find some 'rare' colors like pitchblende, mine all but one, change it to bauxite, copy the bauxite tile, paste over a 20x20 room, mine it, then change all bauxite back into pitchblende.

Or, if it works, just enable hematite to be used as a normal stone and lock in a mechanic with a small supply to make mechanisms. I don't know if they'll be iron mechanisms or hematite mechanisms, though.

I'll try and see.

Edit: Hematite mechanisms. Bleh :( And yes, they do melt.

*useless stones are included in this list. Oh and I can't write.

Guess that requires a new gen? *checks*

Hm, adding a reaction is an entry, I guess? Then it'd require a new world. That's what I get from this post, anyway.

Wait a minute...magma mist? WTF?

From the Wiki

"Steam is created from the mixing of magma and water. This is distinct from mist, a similar looking product of water falling, and smoke, the product of mixing magma and anything else.

In older versions, steam would cause massive injuries and death. In v0.27.176.38c, steam is harmless but still rendered. "

meh, I just edited steel so that you can make mechanisms out of it at the forge.

If I recall correctly, (and I do believe I did it a few times myself successfully), you can edit an existing reaction that you do not plan on using any time soon.  It should maintain the same location, and probably the same name, but everything else should be allowed to change no problem.  You can then edit it back to its original version after you have used the modified reaction to obtain all the bauxite you feel you could ever need.

There's also literal magma mist, analogous to water mist and labeled as such in the game, but I believe it is only created by cave-ins (I first saw it back in the 2d version).

To conclude; there are 5 'mist' effects, I think. Miasma, Smoke, Mist, Magma Mist, Steam. Steam, Smoke and Miasma has negative effects, magma mist is neutral, while pure mist is benefactory. Archives say magma mist burns.

And yeah, magma mist only happens if you cave-in something into magma. Wiki says magma mist can't be created by letting magma free-fall, like a waterfall. Hmm. Gotta test!

Wait, I already know this for a fact.

In order to prevent accidentally draining my forge area I tap a higher z-level magma tube and let it fall.

No magma mist was generated by it dropping 1 z-level. Haven't tried dropping it more then that, but from just a single z-level no mist of any kind was formed.

Question, does mist form when you drop water down a ramp?
