Workshop raw material supply by non-workshop worker; a question.

"Boy! Fetch me more granite!"

"Yessir!"

One assumes the job for "go get me more stuff" would be queued halfway through the previous/current job. I could see this working in some instances, but at higher levels - with near-instantaneous production - it could be difficult or even a backwards step.

The current jury-rig for this - having the fortress collaborate to put stockpiles near workshops - seems adequate for now.

I was thinking the workshop could be changed to hold a few raw materials, should've said so in the OP. It's more a question than a suggestion, as it doesn't really bother me.

Giving workshops a storage capacity for raw goods, that work as a stockpile which automatically takes from any other stockpile (in order of proximity) would be a decent innovation.  But it mostly just helps with micromanagement that's already possible (stockpiles near workshops), so I see no compelling need for such a feature.

... so I see no compelling need for such a feature.

There's also the efficiency bonus of the workshopper not having to fetch their own stuff.

but at 3-4 steps, it's not much of an efficiency bonus compared to having whoever else wanders by coming to get it.

Don't forget about clutter! Workshops DO have an inventory, it's just not accessible to the UI at this point.

It is, actually, the often overlooked and easily forgotten [t] in the main game menu. It's makred 'view items in building.'
But still, I completely support this suggestion.

Sorry, I meant that you can't direct items INTO the workshop inventory. Just like you can't direct items INTO a bin.

You can really only specify materials at a stockpile level, and to an extent some workshop items (make Billon mugs!). The OP suggests either a) allowing workshops to be manipulated like stockpiles or b) making it so that haulers supply workshops instead of the workers themselves.

Actually, the OP doesn't say much, it just has a pretty picture :D
