I'm surprised Dwarves don't have glass barrels.  That way all your idlers could utilize the task: Admire Booze

I'm sure its possible to mod in glass to make bins... or something..  I have not tried much beyond creature creation and some weapon tokens.

Much like every other trick for making object X out of material Y, you can make a reaction at the smelter.

Note that you can't make bins and barrels out of stone, either...
Its understandable why we can't have chalk bins or whatnot. The damn things would crumble if you tried to pick them up while they are loaded with anything heavier than cottonballs. But I think you should be able to have bins made out of some of the stronger types of rock... though they may be prohibitively heavy due to the fact that you have to make them really thick.

Replace rock with glass and you have the problem.

Keep in mind that the stone layer chalk is not the stuff you use to write on a blackboard. That's been ground up, processed, and pressed into those soft sticks. The naturally-occurring mineral is as sturdy as any rock you've ever kicked down the street.

The strength of glass has a lot to do with how well it was made.  Glass by nature is extremely strong, however mircroscopic fissures and cracks provide weak bits.

What might work is to use wear modifiers and have item quality affect how long it takes for bins/barrels to wear down.

Given that walls of soap can withstand magma, I'm cool with glass barrels.

on the other hand, this might devolve into being able to mod glass shirts or armor... that... would be painful to watch.

Well if you did it right, having someones armor do more damage to themselves than prevent it would be both a.) A draw back to otherwise easily made/strong aromor and b.) At least a little realistic. c.) Besides we're talking about a game that allows you to layer 3-4 suits of armor, maybe more if beard armor becomes a possibility.

Come now. Glass isn't that fragile.
Indeed. Glass is actually considerably stronger than a similarly shaped piece of stone. It just has a reputation for breakability because we exploit our ability to mold it into freakishly thin surfaces that we would never dream of carving rock into. Imagine carving a 0.5 m x 0.5 m x 1 mm pane of some sort of rock. It will break well before a similar pane of glass ever would.

I own a set of drinking glasses thick enough that I can drop them on flagstone without one shattering. If one hits exactly right, it may chip or develop a crack and have to be thrown out... but otherwise they bounce. I think dwarves would build at least this robustly just by virtue of being dwarves.

Mind you while glass is strong, it is subject to cracking easily, like rocks. You can't have it bend very much, as metals can. Even at the needed thickness that the bumps it would get in daily work it would be horribly heavy. Another reason why metals and wood are better: They don't need that much weight to hold themselves us.

then again, once breaking gets in I would not mind you being able to make anything from anything. You deal with the breaking and weight problems.

Ever heard of fiber glass?  Yes, it is glass drawn into thread.  Tensile strength greater than steel.

It is an irritant, however.  But it would not be like you imagine it.
