40c: A grizzly discovery
« on: March 09, 2009, 04:57:45 pm »

Had an unfortunate encounter with a grizzly bear earlier. The bear tore apart an engraver. It was subsequently put down by my military.

Odd thing though: it left no skull when butchered. I ended up with a skin, a piles of (9) bones, a single, seperate bone, and some fat.

A quick search did turn up a topic from July 2008 with more or less the same problem, but I didn't get the impression that the problem was ever looked at. Not a huge deal (not like I butcher bears on a regular basis), but I figured I may as well bring it up.

I saved the game shortly afterwards, if it's at all necessary.

Or use skulls frequently, I bet.

Now that someone mentions it, I don't recall having traded away any grizzly bear skull totems when i butchered two tame ones the elves brought me.  I didn't pay much attention at the time, because i batch order such things with 30+ skulls lying around.  But I have remembered other unusual skull totems I've sold (mostly because they're worth more than otherwise expected).

This wouldn't cover Squirrelloid, but I remember a while ago there was a bug where decapitated heads decayed into a bone rather than a skull, which would explain why there was a single separate bone.

Two ways to lose a skull are to decapitate the thing, or to leave a skull above-ground (even if inside) for a while.  My dwarves have killed hundreds more goblins than I have totems.

Trouble is that the bear had just been butchered a minute or two before. It also had an extra bone, which I can only assume took the place of the skull somehow.
