artificial cave river tips
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:05:22 pm »

Hey all,

I've got a rather fun map that's got an above ground brook in the NE quadrant. It's on a plateau next to the cliff I'm carving my fort out of.

Anyways, I'm planning on re routing it through my fotress so it will empty into a chasm(not yet breeched.)

Ideally I'ld like to have it drop it a couple z levels and even have carved out areas along the "river banks".

In addition to any tips you can supply,

1. If I construct a roof over the above ground portion of the stream\brook, will it prevent freezing during the winter?

2.  Will raised bridges block water flow, allowing me to construct a series of locks?

3. The spot where I'm planning to tap/redirect the water source from is 1 z-level below the surface. I'm not to concerned about viscious fish, but could goblins or other siegers, swim into my fort?

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

I'm unsure how freezing water will effect a raising bridge where the water is flowing over.

However, since its a brook, you can make your fortress completely impervious by not channeling out the top most level of ground. There are two levels of "ground" for a brook. As people can just walk right over the water in the brook itself, that is functionally ground. The Z-1 level can be dug in to to get access to the water, and there will be absolutely no access from the surface from the brook.

You could wait for the weather to change and the brook to freeze before building a wall to damn the brook up while you do your work, then during another winter remove the wall to restore water once construction is complete.

Double check your work before you let the water flow! Especially on diagnals.

1. If I construct a roof over the above ground portion of the stream\brook, will it prevent freezing during the winter?

I haven't tried, but yes, it should. As long as the roof is made of things that transform outside to inside (like floors, bars, grates). Water indoors doesn't freeze even if it touches outdoor tiles.

2.  Will raised bridges block water flow, allowing me to construct a series of locks?

No clue, but my guess is "no." When down a bridge is treated like floor tiles, so the water will probably just flow over it. You'll probably need to set up floodgates to get the "locks" effect. You can link the bridges and floodgates to the same lever though to get the same effect.

3. The spot where I'm planning to tap/redirect the water source from is 1 z-level below the surface. I'm not to concerned about viscious fish, but could goblins or other siegers, swim into my fort?

Probably not. Unless they're amphibious, creatures don't pathfind through water. If a goblin accidentally falls into the river and doesn't drown they might be able to do it, but your standard gobbo will not actively try to get into the water to do that. Be careful about freezing water. Once the water turns to ice it's considered a floor tile like any other. If you're really concerned about it, just throw up some grates and that'll keep everything out.

New question! If I were to remove elves [INTELLIGENT] tag in the raws, would it work?

In my current fort,I've done the same thing(well, kinda without the flat riverbanks inside). I use pumps to get the brook 2 z-levels upwards, and have about 5 or so floodgate/locks along the water flow,so i can shut out invaders(so far none have even tried to go that way) if they swim through.
I recommend digging out the whole thing first, then letting the water in once you've triple checked the whole thing.I've lost a fort that way due to me not seeing a hole in the chanell. ::)

You guys are all wrong with questions 1 & 2.

1)  Even if a tile is designated as indoors, if it is above ground, it will always be above ground, and temperature in that tile will reflect outdoor temperatures.  I have used this to my advantage several times before, as did Captain Mayday in Nist Akath's beginnings (when he attempted to breach the aquifer).

2)Raised drawbridges will block liquid flow.  You have to designate a direction in which to raise, however, when designating the bridge to be built.  Drawbridges in the raised position act as walls along the side of the raise direction.  This too is something I have done; if you check out the map in the [shameful-self-advertising]Libash Tobat thread, you can see this being used in the underground river.[/shameful-self-advertising]  I wouldn't use that, but I don't know of any other forts that use it and am too lazy to go through the screenshot process just to answer a question.
