Oops I just read the original post spoiler list and didn't see DF there, so I assumed no one had suggested it.

Myst.
Wizardry I.
Shadow of Yserbius.
Nethack.

(That's my list of not-yet-mentioned games that were important for their time.)

Ilikepie if your morals aren't too strict x-com is on most abandonware sites.
They removed it because you can buy it on steam, and I don't trust steam...

Elite was alright, but of all the space sim games Freespace 2 was my favorite.

No C&C?
No Homeworld? (Original, or Cataclysm, or 2?)
Where's Dungeon Keeper?
What of Fallout?

When you get it on Steam, the version you download is not DRM'ed.  It's just a plain old normal install of the original running in DOSbox, I think.  Buy it on Steam then back it up if you want, if you don't trust Steam.  If you end up losing your computer and your backups, chances are Steam will still be around, and then you can download it again with your account for free in about thirty seconds and it'll set it all up with DOSbox for you again.

Still, if you're paranoid:  The version you get off steam CAN be played without internet, CAN be moved to another computer, etc.

You weren't quick enough. Overall I think the list turned out alright, everyone is sure to agree with a few of the selections. Beats the guiness list imo, but the last console i has was an atari 2600. (what no pitfall or demon attack??)

Personally I'd remove Spelunky and put Planetside in there.

edit; altough I have to admit, it was the first game in which I saw my avatar in a mirror. I think one of the first things I tried was to load up the level editor and place two mirrors in front of each other, which made the game crash, or something  ;D

ha, I remember doing stuff with the level editor. The way they did a 'mirror' was having an exact, mirrored copy of the room you were in behind the 'mirror' (and copying your sprite)  ;D

No one ever admits it, but I reckon the sole reason people play that game is to try and pick up chicks. It's like the poker machines but cheaper.

Face it... People have a lot of fun playing it, even if you don't.  Everything else is sour grapes.

Even if it's just a matter of taste, and everything is relative I'm hard pressed to say... deus ex is a better game than wow is, in a completely absolute sense  ;D

Nah not sour grapes, just insight  :P

WoW could never be a single player game, 'cause not a single player would play it.

I play the pokies, but do you think I would if I had a poker machine at home? Hah, what a f*ing waste

It's not designed to be single player.  The flaws that make it a bad single player experience were expressly designed into to make it a better multiplayer one.

It's pay for play, so the power structure is designed as much as possible around power level equalling time played and factoring out twitch skill (which would alienate more high level players than it would attract)

It's social, so they intentionally create synergies necessary to succeed.

It's persistant, so players aren't allowed to actually change the game world.

It's impressively well suited to do exactly what it does.

It's the chat room for people who 'don't chat'.

It's just a friendly game of catch and kiss.

2 new levels are being introduced after 70. The first appends a + to the start of your name, and the highest appends a @.

It's shit.
