I played DF back when it was 2D, couldn't get into it.

This tutorial brought me back, and I played along to the very end.

I have one question though... you posted something above on a previous page about the parameters for the site insisted on a magma pipe, not a pool. So does that mean the magma you introduce in the tutorial is an unending supply, rather than limited? I dug down deeply enough and discovered that the magma vanishes about ten or so levels down, implying that the magma is a very large 'vase' shaped pool, but your previous post implies it's a pipe. How do I know the difference without risking draining too much of my magma to utilize in the magma forges? (I was considering setting up an obsidian farm.)

The moment you find magma you can see all of it. If it doesn't go all the way down, it doesn't go all the way down

You may be correct - it could very well be a pool.

K! That answers that! I won't be using this magma to create an obsidian farm then, since eventually it'll use up enough magma to lower the level to render my magma smelters, etc, useless. I wonder if I can find a pipe elsewhere... I've been digging like crazy, nothing yet. Hrm.

When I used that map, it had two different magma sites.
And they both started on the same level, too.
I don't recall if the second one was a pipe or not, though. :x

I've stickied these and the Cpt. Duck videos.  I think these are the main tutorials I've heard of outside of whatever is on the wiki.

Quote from: Toady the Great
Things went well this month thanks in part to the Penny Arcade mention and some tutorials that have been posted (TinyPirate's play-along) (captain_duck's videos, now complete).

The tutorials were what led to us being mentioned on Penny Arcade, which is a firehose of link traffic.  A typical month is somewhere between $1200 and $2000, so your contribution indirectly put something like $1500 in Toady's pocket, which will come back to us in the form of awesome features in the code.  Most of us will never be able to donate that much.  What's even better is that you've contributed to the geometric growth of the fanbase.  Anyone who liked the game enough to donate will probably also tell a few friends about the game, and one of those people could end up being the next Baughn (who brought the OpenGL improvements), Markavian (who gave us the map archive), or 0x517A5D (who does memory hacking and other good stuff).

TLDR: your work made lots of money for the Toad!

So in tutorial 12, you say the ramps of the refuse pit need to be removed, or digging under them will cause collapse. I don't get it... why will it collapse?
If the ramps connect Z-2 to Z-1, why would mining on Z-3 do anything? (Is this a bug of some sort? Or am I just not visualizing whats going on properly? (I'm not very good at visualizing stuff).

Thanks!

EDIT: As soon as I read farther I figured it out... you mean if you are channelling/ramp building (I never knew you could channel by building ramps, nice!) and end up with a ramp sitting on top of nothing.
