If there is seasons or if you build it below ground, it's a bad idea. Fun though.

and have no idea ... if building buildings out of water is a bad idea.

How could that possibly be a bad idea?

I'd be happy to contribute!

I've had a lot of positive feedback from my play-along DF tutorials so I thought, now that they are complete, that I would post links to all 12 here.

Play-along? Yes, play along! New players can just pick up the pre-created save in the client I link in the first version and then follow along with my instructions. Lots of folks have said they found this to be an awesome way to learn a complex game! So, anyway, enough about all that. Here are some links.

The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress
- Part 1: “WTF?”
- Part 2: “No, srsly, WTF?!”
- Part 3: “Dwarf whatnow?”
- Part 4: “It almost makes sense!”
- Part 5: “Onwards to Victory!”
- Part 6: “Dwarf Resource Management”
- Part 7: “A Mighty Fortress!”
- Part 8: “It’s a trap!”
- Part 9: “Nobles and other useless sods”
- Part 10: “Soldiers and your army”
- Part 11: “Burning hot mag-ma!”
- Part 12: “That’s all folks?!”
- Post-tutorial Dwarf Fortress links and resources

Feedback and comments welcome.

Er, how come you can't download my client zip? You need it more than the init file. You can edit the downloaded init file yourself, btw.

I just noticed this thread and also have to thank you for all the work you put into your tutorial. I've known about dwarf fortress for years now, but every time I tried to sit down and play it I was just totally lost. Now, my first fort that's grown out of the examples you laid out is going into its 9th year of slaughtering goblins(and humans...and hopefully soon elves too) and making shiny things ;D So thank you, for finally giving me the motivation and starting tools to get into this thing for real.

I have to heap praise on this as well.  I'd never known there was such a thing as this game, and now I want to help, if only to make this get developed faster.  But no amount of money I can throw Toady's way will make the work come faster.  Wish he'd hire me as a programmer... >.>

Only complaint I have with it is it's lack of explaining the save file system.  It was so infuriating, especially coming from his tutorial.   I assumed the "RegionX" folder was the original save file for the level, NOT the one that is replaced when "Save Game" is chosen.  I lost many a fortress when I quit for the day, tried to load the latest auto-save, and lost a whole season's work.  I restart out of frustration.

I will, howver, recommend that people refer to the wiki for most questions.  For some time, the WIKI and his tutorial were refered to all the time, but now only the wiki is needed.  But even then, I think I've read all I need from it (besides referring to the "stone" section to find out of chromite or lignite or limonite or... etc) is useful or not.  Needs to be a section in the wiki for "Usable to smelt/burn into coke" section"  "usable for crafts" section, and a "usable for construction" section.

Anyone ever find any sand on the tutorial map? I tried to find some just now so I could write another tutorial but completely failed. Damn!
