Domitian - I believe I did do something on embarking, but is was for DF2009 so it was way out of date. I suggest just not making all those settings and simply avoiding evil areas (while also avoiding aquifers etc). You will be fine.

Also, something of my new project is hinted at in a sticky thread in the DF mode forum.

Good tutorial but itīs 3 years old already. The UI has changed (for the better) and novice DF players (like I have started out only shortly ago) might be alienated by the deprecated version.

Yeah I'm struggling. I read through and watched about 4 hours worth of tutorials when I first started playing dwarf fortress and it only TAPPED LIGHTLY into the entire spigot of what was available. I left for a while (Skyrim, you know) and now everything has changed. I forgot a lot of what I had learned, the rest is new. Definitely need some updated tutorials.

Hi folks. Since I've written a book on Dwarf Fortress I'm not going to be directly supporting or updating my old tutorials any more. Spare time for DF will be put into making sure the book is up to date! That's not to say these tutorials no longer work - they're still perfectly viable - I just won't be adding to them in the foreseeable future.

While running the tutorials, I noticed that you can build walls on top of other walls, so long as you make sure to leave your dwarves a way of getting off the wall.

You can do this by undercutting the slope (digging out past where the slopes are in the place you're building your new wall) and building the wall double thick for a few squares at the edge. Then when you build your wall on the upslope side, build the wall out onto the lower wall a square or two, making sure to leave the extra space on the inner side so your builders can walk back onto the ledge after placing the upper section.

Where would I find the artwork tilesets for the new version? Just downloaded the game today, and have been running the tutorials, but I am infamiliar with how to find and load the art sets into the new version.

Also, in the new version, there must be some new way to move around in the menus for things like farming, because alt and the up and down arrows works in the old version that came with the tutorial, but NOT in the new version of the game.

quite a few of the steps in the tutorial no longer work in the latest version...for example, you can't smelt without finding "Refined Coal" first. Here's hoping you can actually find some and aren't in a coal-free zone.
