My knowledge of playing DF is somewhat low, since my old PC really couldn't run it. This one's better. Imma play through on these ones, but if you do DF2010 ones then I'll do them too.

Yes, if someone could take the time to do a step-by-step guide for 2010, it'd probably be highly appreciated by many.

Here's a direct link to the tutorial PDF:
http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/06/03/complete-dwarf-fortress-tutorials-in-one-big-pdf/

Here's a link to the file with the saved game etc:
http://www.filedropper.com/dwarffortress
or

That should do the trick!

Hi all,

I'm new to DF and I downloaded the play along tutorial game, unzipped it and ran the game.

According to the tutorial I should see and option to continue playing.  I do not.

The only options I see on the main beginning screen are:
Start PLaying
Create a New World Now!
Create New World with Parameters
Object testing arena
Quit

Please tell me what I am doing wrong as I am eager to get up to speed on this game

Thanks,

SNAFU

The tutorial only works for the older 40d version, you've got the new version of DF.

Look on the downloads page for an Older Versions link, and grab the one with a version number ending with "40d".

use that version with the tutorial.

Hi and thanks for the information.

Here is the file I downloaded - "DFVIDTUTS2010 play along edition.zip"

Just to confirm, this is using the latest version and will not work with the exisitng tutorial pdf, correct?

So now I have a 40d version (the one from MayDay - DF22) which is 40d18 I think) and I got to the point in the tutorial about making a farm.

I can't make one in the fortress (but I can make one outside - I can't plant anything in it though) because the games says I have to have soil or mud.

So how to I get soil or mud into my fortress?  Or is there yet another 40d version that I need to work through the tutorial?

Thanks,

Actually, I'll bet you embarked in a location without sand or soil.

prepare for Fun unless you can figure out how to irrigate.

Unless there's no water. In which case, definitely prepare for Fun.

Wow thanks! These were great for getting the basics of Dwarf Fortress. I'm just wondering if you'll release another that includes the changes of the version? The changed control in particular are giving me a ton of grief  :'(

Actually, I have Yellow Sand all over the place.  I've tunneled through it in places and there are spots of it outside of my fortress.

I looked in the wiki about soil, mud, etc.  It tells me I have to have it and that I can't put a farm on rock, but I haven't yet found something that helps me to overcome this problem.

When I search for a place to build a fortress, I look for some kind of flowstone, sand of some kind, no aquifer and a river if possible.  The site I chose this time had all of these, yet I am still stuck.

What is the correct combination of things needed to set up a fortress?  I don't mind the complexity or figuring things out, but isn't there a flat out "You have to have these" list so that I can finally get through the tutorial?

Well, there are above- and underground farms. What you can plant on them is different, underground is mostly fungi-stuff, for which dwarves have seeds that can be "bought" on the embark screen (plump helmets are easiest, as they can be eaten raw). To place an underground farm, you have to either dig into a soil layer, or you have to dig into a stone layer and then flood it with water to produce mud. An aboveground farm can be placed on any soil type with open sky above. But to plant things there, you have to gather herbs first (in designations, needs a dwarf with plant gathering job active). Eventually, you will get seeds from those herbs (if you eat or brew them), and those you can plant in aboveground farms.

Note that in the new version of the game, you can no longer place underground farms directly on soil. You HAVE to flood it with water first.

Checklist of stuff i usually bring along:
2 - 7 picks
1 axe (no longer necessary in the new version, as one can be produced from the wood of the wagon you get when deconstructing it)
40 - 80 drink units
40 - 80 food units
20 plump helmet spawn (seeds for the first farm)
0 - 1 anvil (can be traded for later)

Thanks much.

I am stuck right now on the steps needed to make an underground farm.  Specifically, I've read many posts about the need for water, etc.  But most of these posts are written with the expectation that the reader understands the jargon of the game and understands flooding, flood gates, etc and what is needed to produce the needed equipment and the proceedure for moving/relocating water.  If I get past this, I can keep on with the tutorial.

I keep hoping that I will find a write-up on the exact steps written for a beginner that explains things in depth - but so far no luck and the wiki hasn't been very forthcoming either (or I haven't foudn the correct section yet).

For instance, I started a new game and I've tunneled to a point where I hit wet limestone.  There is a pool above this point, which is at the corner of the area I want my farm in.  So what, exactly, do I need to do to get some of the water from this pool above into my farm area and contain it there given that I have only my 7 starting dwarves (and wht skills do they need to accomplish it?)

Last question of the moment, I keep seeing references to "7/7" and to "bring it down to 1/7", etc.  I am interpreting this and the amount or depth of the water, but what does this really mean in game mechanics terms?

Thanks

It seems that your new to dwarf fortress so, first of all, welcome :D

In addition you can also view the captnduck video tutorials on youtube. He has over 40 videos explaining many things and they are very usefull.

He also has some videos about the new version explaining the military, farming and talk about the new cave system too.

If you only want to learn about floodgates for now you might want to check his video nº 26 where he tells how to build floodgates and link them to levers, although he uses them for magma on the video instead of water, but it should give you a good idea on how to do it, that along with the new version farming video.

This is the thread about his videos: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=dc56b72be8f2be64fe898d304afc8672&topic=28477.0

These are the links to the videos about the new version:

Hope this helps, and as allways... have FUN :P

For those new people having trouble with underground farms in the new version, here is a step by step tutorial I put together quickly.

(I won't post the images themselves here, just the links to the images)
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/6867/farmtutorial1df2010.png
Here is a place you might want to set up a farm. Note the murky pools and the brook (We won't use the brook)
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6278/farmtutorial2df2010.png
Same place, except one z level below ground.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6787/farmtutorial3df2010.png
This is where you want to grow your farm. We won't bother using any floodgates or mechanisms or anything, this is much more primitive than that.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1041/farmtutorial4df2010.png
Goodness! Its all been dug out by some dwarves. Who would have thought that would happen?
But the silly dwarves, they have designated the wall between the farm area and that pool for digging!
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/2405/farmtutorial5df2010.png
The dwarves go for a swim. They've got a bit of kobold blood on them so it gets washed into the farm soil. Extra fertiliser!
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8673/farmtutorial6df2010.png
Whoops, that pool was too big, and now the water level in the farm is too high to build. We can work around that...
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8582/farmtutorial7df2010.png
Farming area has been enlarged.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9964/farmtutorial8df2010.png
And finally, the water settles to 1/7 and evaporates. Farm away.
