Research Project: The Battle Of Little Bighorn
« on: March 07, 2009, 07:37:16 pm »

I'm doing an English Research Project on the Battle of Little Bighorn (also known as Custer's Last Stand). One of the things I need is an interview. The problem is, I live in New Zealand, and the most I've been able to get out of most people is "Oh, that was between the Americans and the Indians, wasn't it?" Wikipedia has been a lot more helpful, but I'm required to get my information from several different sources. So I come to you. Is anyone here able to help me answer these questions?

1. What were the events leading up to this battle (what caused it to happen)?
2. What was the outcome, and what were the short term results of this battle on America?
3. What effects did this battle have on American/Native American relations?

Any other information would be appreciated as well, but those are the important ones.

You need an interview?  Not with, like, someone who was there right?  I know it happened in another country, but I'm sure your professor knows there's nobody with contemporary experience with the subject.  That in mind, I can give you a link to a professor I had who's an authority on Native American history.  If he can give you an interview, I know he'll direct you to people who can.

Well, Custer's stand. Fun part of history.

1) The Souix fail to reconize the rights of travelers. Most of them don't want to actually STOP in North Dakota right now (who would?). Eventually, the US gov't gets annoyed and moves more troops to the area. Meanwhile, Sitting Bull gains more power and starts to unite the war minded Indians. The army sets up forts. Custer and his men (calvarymen, but without horses) leave the safe zones of the wilderness. Pretty much every hostile souix meets them. They get masacared.

2) Lots of publicity for the problem. Some dead soldiers (not enough to matter in the large scale).

3) The Souix lose. They never had a chance, especially when their entire culture was dependent on Bufalo, which are being eradicated by Americans. The Indians eventually become entirely dependant on Government handouts.

Somewhat rough, and I didn't actually look anything up, but I think that's the gist of it.

By interview, I really just meant please answer the questions. If one of your relatives was involved in the war and passed down his stories of the battle, that would suit too. Also, from what i know, the settlers were actualy invading/stealing Sioux land because gold had recently been discovered there. Custer decided to attack a numerically superior force (that also had superior weapons). To compound the matter, he split up his force. Only a few soldiers survived, and none of the men that went with Custer.

From what I remember of my history class, Custer was all like "Hey, See that big group of pissed off Indians, LET'S GO GET'EM!" and then he died.

And from what I can decipher from the videogame, he also had sex with one of the indian women.

What are you asking for anyway?  I'm pretty sure you need an interview from someone besides a bunch of dorks on the Internet.

Here, e-mail this guy.  Give him your questions, or ask him for a referral.

The point of research projects is usually to do research....like where you go look up written materials
