COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Dwarf Fortress File Depot
« on: March 07, 2009, 01:40:38 pm »

I have noticed that it is rarely used. Half the time someone posts a download link, it's on some other site. so, as a
COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
I hereby post a link to it: http://dffd.wimbli.com/index.php

And the following message: It's there for a reason, use it people! I don't wanna have to wait 10 seconds before i can start downloading (unless it's an actual bandwidth/connection problem)!

Yes, i know some (perhaps alot) of us know about it and use it, but apparently a lot don't. It's been around since before i started playing, so it's not new.

I also propose a link to it be put in the community games and stories board, either in the top block text or (IMO the better choice) as a stickie.

Announcement, Depot.

I rarely have anything that needs uploading, but I do keep DFFD in mind.

The file depot has been listed on the wiki site also. [Main Page/Useful Links]
In fact it's listed there since the DFFD site has been launched, so I suppose that lot of people knew about the site already. Either way, perhaps Toady should make a stickied "Useful Links" topic or something.  :)

Any objection to moving this to the community games and stories board?

Not if you fix your spelling in the title first.

^ While we are at it...Solar, how the hell could you misspell "announcement" in the title of the topic + in the message text also? I am pretty sure that you know the correct spelling of this word...so I nominate your post in the "accidental mistyping" category.  ;D
[Also fix "Deopt"..]
Okay, on a more serious note, I think that topics like these should be always posted here, in the DF General subforum.
PS.
Like I've said, Toady should make a stickied "DF Links" or "Useful Links" topic here. Lot of newbies don't know about the wiki at all I think.

I prefer posting files to a site I control.  Ergo, I don't use DFFD.

I also will rarely download something off of DFFD. The typical conditions will be to download a utility that someone is having trouble with, so I can understand what's going on.

lol, thanks for the spelling corrections guys! (how'd i manage to do that... twice?!)

the reason i was thinking of moving it to community games is that i immagine that it's more of a problem there, what with succession games going on there. Also, there's already 4 stickies in this board, i'd hate for it to get lost. the wiki is linked in most of the top blocks for the DF boards.

(hmm, i'll make sure there's a link to the DFFD on the wiki page about succession games.)

I can understand wanting to post on a site you control, but most of us don't have that luxury. But why not download from it? Do you look for an alternate place to dl it from? I rarely get stuff from there, but i haven't looked for stuff there to dl. But i would much rather get it from there than one of the more annoying free file hosting sites.

I think most people do know about the site. It certainly does get plenty of use.  :)

But i would much rather get it from there than one of the more annoying free file hosting sites.
That's the primary reason for the site's existence. The usual free file hosting site is saturated with ads, has a timer before you can download, will sometimes limit how much you can download in a day, and will eventually delete your files.
If you have your own good hosting solution which doesn't have those problems, that's cool; I just abhor those widespread crappy generic file hosting sites.

Indeed, I normally host my own files, but if someone links to a DF-related file that is not hosted on the DFFD or a private server, I fly into a luggage-like rage of wrath.

Someplace special

I don't download any DF files except there except for those that go into the DFMA. The problem is, the last file I needed to upload/download was a map, the one before that was a map, and before that was over half a year ago. It is just easier exchanging seeds than save files...

I already use DFFD for all of my DF File needs, but I think more people could benefit from knowing about it.
