Hm, it's funny. CoD 4. is on the list, but Doom or Duke Nukem 3D is not. What the hell?! This list is FUBAR...seriously.  ::)

Did anyone bother to read the article? I think it clears up some of the "WTF?" moments in the rankings. They still do some pretty statistically unsound stuff, but some explanation is better than none.

This is a terrible list, just like pretty much every best video games of all time lists.  Especially since this is supposed to be the 50 most important and influential games of all time.  As usual though, it was made by people who don't know jack shit about video games.  Revisionist history I guess you could call it.

What would a real list made by people who do know about video games look like? I'm willing to bet we keep at least 50% of that list, maybe more.

Every single game on that list is shit in my eyes, lists like these play out as more of a "DO NOT PLAY THESE GAMES" list then a list of good games.

No. It's free. I can assure it. It's the open source one, the one that people were just complaining about how you can't blow up fences. I refuse to call it a remake because it certainly isn't a remake, it has a brand new story and everything. I still hated it.

What would a real list made by people who do know about video games look like?

1. Game #8583469, Which Is the Best Game EVER because I LOVE IT! Since I love it, it must be the best game ever, and if you don't love it, you are stupid.
2. Game #596845, Which Is the Second-Best Game EVER because I LIKE IT! Since I like it, it must be the second-best game ever, and if you don't like it, you are stupid.
3. Game #686446...you get the deal.

Lists are subjective. People who 'know' games also have some inherent bias toward the type of games they like. I think Guinness' list, using stats to decide if games are good or not, is far better than relying on subjectivity.

EDIT: The article was making fun of the List, so you have to look elsewhere to find out why they did it.

At least they hired  "a crack team of industry experts", rather than us. At least the industry experts know about what games sell and what games are important in the grand scheme of things, especially in terms of business. Remember, the list talk about what games have influence, Tetris has influence, and so Halo, LoZ: OOT, and Super Mario Kart, and many other games. Super Mario Kart, Halo and LoZ: OOT all spawned important fraschines, and Tetris...Tetris got so many clones it's not even funny!

CoD 4 was an X-Box game and didn't lose much in the translation.

Doom on the other hand was vaguely on the SNES and lost a ton in the translation.

Duke Nukem 3d WAS NOT A CONSOLE GAME EVER.

CONSOLE.

GAME.

LIST.

Naw Id say 25%

There is a large difference between Influencial, Good, and Popular.

Also along with the fact that it is obvious it is "Console games only" the list does hint to me that it is a bit more about America (AKA the United States) then the World.

Which is a shame compared that it is the World Guinness book of records.

Which only further supports my claim that the beer company made it.

The list appears in the astonishingly good new book Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2009, which someone at Eurogamer may or may not have a vested interest in because they helped write it. The book has already been met with huge critical acclaim on a scale previously unheard of in human history, with some analysts predicting it will be remembered for all time as the best work of literature ever produced.

Wait.. what?

Then again most gamers, like most book readers, don't know much about games.
