Scary, insane child.
« on: March 05, 2009, 03:46:45 pm »

Oh god. I dropped her and her immigrant parents into a small room without food, water or light, with dwarf bones piled high and then left her. Then she made one friend. Then her dad died. Then her friend died. And then I checked her status:

I mean, WHAT THE HELL? ECSTATIC?!? The only positive things that I can see are that she talked with her brother and made a friend. Both the friend and the brother are now dead. Oh, and she saw a nice looking door. Looking at her stats: "She is not affected by the suffering of others" - this girl sounds like a freakin' psychopath, what do you guys think? Has this happened to you guys before?

Also, a few moments ago she became starving and only dropped to "happy". Jesus Christ, if I weren't working on a "7 dwarves only" challenge I would definitely recruit this nutcase into the military...

Some time later, when I had smoothed every inch of my fort, my lone legendary engraver's first engraving was this:

I wonder who he was referring to? It seems her ecstatic laughter echoed throughout the fort...

Keep her fed, and have her train with other immigrants that come. Have her become a champion, mining out her own deathtrap lair to kill immigrants that come to the fortress. She will be the psychopathic guardian of the seven dwarf fortress.

I don't think I've ever noticed the "not affected by the suffering of others" one before.  Out of curiosity, what is Atir the god of?

Quoted for agreement. Sometimes, seven dwarf challenges are meant to bend.

Seconded. If you don't accept this dwarf into your fortress you're clearly not meant to play DF.

My only problem is that she is a child, so it will take some time for her to train. However, I have saved her (and her only remaining brother - who interestingly she has absolutely NO relationship with). I think I will kill the brother and let her join my 7 until she becomes a champion wrestler (I think she would like killing things with her bare hands).

By the way, "Atir is a deity of The Grasping Tongs (a randomly generated name, by the way). Atir most often takes the form of a female dwarf and is associated with jewels"

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I THINK WE HAVE A GODDESS ON OUR HANDS.

Use her brother as her sparring partner.

Time spent as a child is time to raise her social skills, and thus her attributes. Almost as effective as time on a pump, without getting tired.

I mean, WHAT THE HELL? ECSTATIC?!?

Pretty weird. Toady must "balance"/fix the morale system as soon as possible.  :D
Note: "She is resistant to change" & "She is getting used to tragedy". However, this [that she is ecstatic] still makes no sense to be honest.

I think it must be mostly the fact that "she is not affected by the suffering of others", which I think LITERALLY means she is not affected AT ALL. So like she just ignores any deaths and is only negatively affected by hunger etc. Which is pretty fucked up in my view, but perhaps since I have only seen this once means that it is fairly rare and she is just an exception.

On the topic of insane children, today I had a kid get taken by a strange mood.

He couldn't complete his work, so he went insane... in the form of murderous rampage. Consumed by bloodlust, the formerly harmless, innocent child dashed towards the center of the fortress from the peripheric craftdwarf shop he had seized.

Made aware of the berserk dwarflet's course, the melee fighters scrambled towards a suitable interception point. The rabid kid managed to considerably wound another child (red wound on an arm and yellow one somewhere else I can't remember at the moment) before being put down by the regretful champions. Given kids can have superdwarven attributes, perhaps those wounds the victim received were a result of incredibly powerful punches.

So, on the whole, in a parallel universe, my blood-crazed child could've been the perfect partner for this psycho girl of yours. At least until they mauled each other to death.

It makes sense. I've never seen that personality trait before, so it's probably pretty rare. Once in a while you get a crazy.

You need to have her kill her brother.  Make a 1 tile room with a glass spike trap, station the brother on top of it, seal it off but have a window facing the lever controlling the trap, and have the child continually pull the lever.

Is lever pulling possible for children?  If not, then either wait for her to grow up, or have her deconstruct something that results in her brother dying.

I believe dwarves get the "Not affected by the suffering of others" after repeatedly witnessing deaths, or maybe from having family members or friends die.  My current mayor has that trait, and she had her husband die heroically defending the fort from a triple ambush, and she just lost her son to a snatcher.

(Edit)  My mistake, Duke.  "Not affected" is a personality trait which indicates nearly zero sympathy.

I believe children can pull levers. You can use the building settings to make her the only one able to use it.

Also, as a sidenote, I agree with you: WTF?

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

You are looking for the trait called 'Doesn't care about anything anymore.' The difference here is that these are veterans of war who care not for anything anymore. This kid doesn't care about anybody.
