Pulling levers for sh*t and giggles
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:07:54 pm »

Small Suggestion from me.

Basically right now we have crazy dwarves go berserk, which is really bad, and going melancholic or batshit insane. The latter two options don't really bother that much, or in fact differ little from each other in consequence. The mad dwarf is mostly harmless until he dies of starvation just like a depressed one.

My idea to change this and add some more potentially Fun! moments would be to make an insane dwarf act up for his namesake, insanely.

A dwarf that goes Stark Raving Mad will once again go running around tossing his clothes of and instead of succumbing slowly to starvation he would make a mess of your fortress.

The guy runs around hauling stuff that does not require hauling, occupying workshops to make some useless crafts out of his own feces and most destructively, pulling levers that are not designated for pulling. This minor inconvenience would make fortress designers a bit more careful about placing their doomsday levers out in the open.

Players might feel nessesary to confine or euthanise these dwarves, though others may find it amusing to keep them accommodated. The would make good jesters on a nobles court or possibly inspire philosophers. Giving them a random chance of producing masterful items would also give keeping them around a point.

I for one can get enough of random comedy moments in this game. The more things that induce them the better. :D

Before I speak... Let me say you did a horrible censorship job. (It is a pet peave of mine... Honestly what child is fooled?)

To your topic...

While I do agree that extra kinds of Tantrums could be interesting (Heh, Chaotic) I don't agree with using them as a sort of freek show. That isn't really the kind of insane the game has... which is a mental breakdown.

pet peave...
freek

peeve, freak.

Don't introduce pet peeves unless you are willing to bear those of others.

I think this is a fine suggestion, though I would add that children should similarly pull levers on rare occasion, because, well, they do that...

:P dont make levers. If there would be a lever to destroy the universe with a sign over it "Dont flip the lever it destroys the universe" the paint of this sign wouldnt have time to dry.

Well why not this random stuff can cause some funny chaos.

Except that it's not realistic.  Someone who has broken down into madness isn't going to have the coherence to think "lever . . . pull . . . make something bad happen . . . do it!"  They're more along the lines of running around ripping off their clothes.

You are half-wrong there. They won't make the connection between the havoc that results from lever-pulling and lever-pulling. They just see something that could be pulled and pull it.

I very much support this. Then we could make a dwarven asylum. Whats the difference between a normal one? A dwarven one is filled with countless levers. They all control the deathtrap upright spikes. Even in madness they serve the fortress.
I also imagine this is one of the more capable of the different versions of madness, and if Toady fixes the bug where dwarves eat every and all vermin insane dwarves would regularly catch and eat vermin. They would also eat rotten things, with a good chance of becoming sick and a small chance of dieing from it.

Capturing them should be easy

Having my former friend run around naked babbling about him not being Shazam probably wouldn't make me happy

You must not have kids. They don't pull it to make something bad happen, they pull it because it's there, for the same reason that they run around and rip off their clothes - because they can.

I seldom meet kids that behave that way.

I'll take that as a 'no, I don't have kids' vote. Trust me, if you had a lever in your house within reach and without some kind of protection, in the years in which they rattle around and explore, they'd pull the lever at some point. Even if there is a .1% chance on any given day that they'd pull the lever, they'd end up pulling it at least once before they learn to read.

I'm imagining crazed dwarves doing profoundly weird things. Urist McNutcase has developed a compulsion to jam anything colored blue up his anus, or alternately other peoples anuses, and will only stop when somebody takes him out of commission. Or he starts stacking rocks in little piles and knocking them over in a game of dominos... particularly dangerous if he is legendary and is stacking piles of boulders fifty feet high. Or he makes garlands of flowers and wants to go out and give them to raiding goblins, opening every door on the way out to see them.

This sort of thing should be crazy random, dictated by the same sort of mechanics that everyone thought would be a good idea for weaving spells for the magic arc. I also think such a thing should have a chance to be merely temporary or to give the poor bastard lucid moments. He might only be (visibly) insane after seeing a unicorn after a traumatic experience in his history. It should generally be difficult for the player to tell what kind of nutcase a crazed dwarf is, requiring actual observation.

If we are going to give kids a tendency to randomly pull levers, I'd like to have the option to restrict door access to certain groups, the same way we can restrict door access to animals. The dungeon could only allow guards, prisoners and nobility in, the lever room will be forbidden to children and so on.
