Throw in a dragon for fun - and with throwing in I mean bridge-throw.

Actually just insert the goblins that way ;) Less chance of your dwarfs dieing or getting hurt and you can focus on one ball at a time.

The thing with an elevated goal (stop Americanizing the sport! :P) is that it's a lot less likely to have stuff sent up to it, so it'd lead to a lot of boring games with no scoring at all. An underground/roofed pitch would keep all the parts on the field, and make it easier to score. Besides, if goblinball were an outdoors sport, it'd be undwarvenly. ;D

Also, if magma is used in the goals, it'd be difficult to count the points of each side, given the bodies/parts would disintegrate upon touching the searing substance.

*sigh*
You're all setting the goal way too low.
The REALLY fun thin to do, would be making the field in front of the fortress, and encased by walls, moats, and a single bridge. Then, when a siege comes, the siegers enter the field on their way inside the fortress, and the game can begin  ;D

You could use retractable grates to keep the dwarves safe. Use grates and bridges all hooked up to a lever to "reset" the field :D

No that's not it;  they mean you carve out a two z-level cavern and have two goals on each side, one elevated and one not.  The magma would be around the goal so that misses disintegrate.  But it was your idea, so you have ultimate say.

The problem is arranging friendly scrimmages for practice games.

But, then it'd be koboldball, and everyone knows that's a totally different game!

yes, everyone knows you strip the goblins down to nude pregame, wilst kobold ball you get points for knocking clothes without any kobold inside into the goals. getting a kobold into the opponents goal is NEGATIVE points for you.

combining the two into simple Invaderball is even funner (extra fun for adding an elf or two)

Hmm... what would the rules for elfball be...

points for knocking trees/logs into the magma?

I would do something more like bowling for elves. Something involving a ballista...
