Claiming items lost in the river
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:01:12 am »

Fisherdwarves should be able to pull claimed items out of the river.
I hate watching a nice set of steel armor just flow away ever-so-slowly...

It would be really tricky to catch a suit of armor using the bare hands our fisherdwarves use for equipment.

Diving for junk sounds undwarfy; instead, dwarves should hate water and use massive amounts of equipment.  But humans and elves might be divers.

We have a system for turning water into dry land, and a system for hauling objects from dry land to other dry land; combine these two processes in the Dwarfiest way possible and you've got your answer.  If it's worth fishing out, it's worth building a complex system of locks, pumps, reservoirs, and collapsible stairs for.

The best way is to collapse the ENTIRE RIVER one z-level.

...

I don't know if that will actually get your armor back, but you should go test it. It sounds dwarfy.

Small items could also be fetched by dogs.

This idea is wort resurrecting!

Problem is that sooner-or-later moats get filled with stray projectiles and goblins. As we all know, every item laying around adds to lag and clutters stocks menu. (Not to mention OCD issues where even [H]iding them does not help).

Pumping everything away and clearing it manually is not always an option (especially if you abuse river to be part of your moat). lava will not incinerate everything.

I'd imagine that rope/chain with attached hook (anchor!) can be used to fish up various items (armors/clothes/corpses). Or halberd/wooden stick with hook. Anything that allow then to reach down really.

Similarly, dwarves could actually attempt to dive and fetch items. If they can swim, they sure could pick that arrow while they are at it. No diving helmets or so necesary. Just hold breath for ten seconds.

I strongly approve of this!

Nothing peeves me off more than stray goblinite or bolts sitting at the bottom of a river where it cannot be reached.

There ought to be some way to retrieve this stuff. Maybe trained animals like dogs? Maybe just allow dwarves to swim. Something.

My OCD does not allow me to have even 1 single stray, unaccounted for bolt at the bottom of a river.   :(

Being able to situationally pathfind in water would likely require a lot of coding. It would be pretty useful though, facilitating easy swimming training and underwater civs in addition to item reclamation

Personally, I'd prefer the route of making dwarves be able to swim more easily, so that a short swim to pick up items would generally work after a bunch of tries for an unskilled swimmer and after a few ones for a skilled swimmer.  Of course, there'd be a bit of risk involved, but it wouldn't be much for the skilled swimmer unless he was carrying out plate mail or in a raging river or something.
