Technical: boost screen grid size
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:19:34 am »

The current maximum GRID and FULLGRID sizes are 200 in each dimension.  I think that, at least in the X dimension, that 200 is too small.

I normally run in windowed mode, but sometimes switch to fullscreen to get a better overview of the map.  To do this, I use the curses_640x300.png as the fullscreen font so that I can fit as much on the screen as I can.

My monitor's native resolution is 1680 by 1050 pixels.  I could fit 210 tiles horizontally, if the game made it possible.

Many monitors have native resolutions of 1920 or even 2048 horizontal pixels, which would allow 240 or 256 tiles using this font.

As 256 is a power of 2, it would seem to be the obvious choice for expansion.  So I would suggest changing the grid size to 256x128 or 256x256.

Question to all: does anyone use more than 128 tiles vertically?

Question to all: would you use multi-monitor support if it were implemented?  How?  (I visualize using the second display for my map overview, while using the primary display as a more zoomed-in view.)

My workstation 30" display supports up to 2560x1600 and with the 8x8 font I use I could technically attain a grid resolution of 320x200 (I instead play at half that grid size and have the tiles stretch to fit). I too am one of those that loves to gander at the marvels of a fully functioning fortress at high grid resolutions and would be overly enthralled at the prospect of having a fortress view span the expanse of my monitor.

The idea of having the map overlay in one display sounds great for those with dual monitor setups. I can envision tabbing through the views and having them automatically shuffle between displays.

EDIT: I even like the idea of being able to tab my stock screens etc to one monitor or at least to one side, this, however, is encroaching on the interface overhaul more than just technically increasing the grid size  :)

Yes, higher grid size please! I was kind of disappointed when I finally got a widescreen monitor and the whole screen wasn't used when I set the grid to 240x135. I was using an 8x8 tileset on my old 1024x768 CRT monitor before I upgraded to the LCD one with a native resolution of 1920x1080 and I wanted to keep the same tileset so I set the grid appropriately... didn't notice the warning about max grid size. Now I'm using a 12x12 tileset at 160x90.

Which I guess also answers one of the OP's questions: If I could get the expanded horizontal dimension, then yes, I would use more than 128 vertically.
