If you want your rooms to be cheaper you can also combine bedrooms. It is a good way out of the "Homelessness" situation.

I mean... Sure the bed is nice... but split it up 5 ways and it is worthless.

 Interesting fact:
A bedroom consisting of a single plain bed and four masterpiece clear glass windows would be considered royal.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

I give everyone 5x5, founders get 9x9 and nobles get as far as the bedroom designation can extend. I spoil my dorfs, since I'm helpless against the power that is tantrum spiral.

I recommend using 1x1 bedrooms. You will carve them quickly and if you design them right, you will have plenty space to expand them later.

Easy - decorated walls and floor and artifact bed.

Usually 2x2 or 3x3 with bed, and coffer and cabinet when I get around to it, unengraved. Usually, the choice between 2x2 or 3x3 depends entirely on how many I can evenly place in the area I've designated for living quarters.

I built a skyscraper out of obsidian blocks, Currently all 100 of my dwarfs live in 3x3 rooms, nobles are the only ones to live underground in 10x15 rooms masterfully carved of course.

See, now that would not be possible, unless the Noble entered the 1x1 aquarium by being dropped in it via a trapdoor. :P

edit:
personally it varies, Initially always had 3x3s exclusively, then 2x2 & 2x3 even 1x1 as I had an economy eviction rash happen. Currently experimenting with irregularly shaped rooms in a pattern around meetingrooms. Massed barracks are sufficient to keep dorfs from sleeping in the hallways.

There would only be four windows. He could, you know, move diagonally. Hell, with a good-enough bed and with a few decent attachments to the windows and bed the owner of the room likely would not mind they are missing some diagonal walls. They are just flanked on four sides by glass monoliths.

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

I like symmetry, so it's either 3x3, or 1x3, in line with the door or 1x3 in a little T shape.

Do dwarves mind if they are in the same room as another dwarf? Well, I know that overlapping bedroom designations create unhappy dwarves, but does a bedroom need a wall around it? Would it be enough to carve out a giant room consisting of a whole bunch of 3*3 bedroom designations without the room values decreasing? Does walking make noise?
