I always use 1x3 so each room can have a cabinet and coffer.

Helps keep the fortress tidy.,

Who likes to climb over furniture? 2x3 personally as a minimum. C'mon, that's 1200 tiles (20x60) for a 200 dwarf fortress. Cheapskates...

Royalty rooms are easy...

Ya know, That Golden Block bridge, with the Masterwork obsidian levers n mechanisms, all those platinum n gold stuff inset into the wall... The magma directly below the bridge.... the Artifact door that seems to jam fairly regularly...

Anyway, I start off with about 20 3x3 rooms, then I switch to the same area filled with 2x3 rooms, then the same area again with 1x3 rooms. all rooms are branched off a main hallway with 2 tile wide halls.

I once in a fort that expanded to quickly did a quick fix for housing. i just dug out a soil level and plopped beds with 2 tiles inbetween any two beds and bang i had 3x3 rooms. this worked with the nobles because i got lucky with somekind of artifact furniture and overlapped the noble rooms after walling with statues.

i nearly allways give my dwarves 3 by 3 rooms. and i take note of who is legendary and engrave their walls. my current fort has some little L shaped ones with 4 tiles in them in a fractul, but they just feel too small. while you can get away with just having enough room for just a bed, i like having larger spaces. even with really stupidly good furniture thanks to so many masons and carpenters getting moods and turning legendary, ive managed to keep everyone in my current fort in housing despite the economy.

I do 2x2 for the Dwarves and Nobles get 4x4 or bigger, depending on what they need. The Nobles get a basement for their offices.

I have a strict policy for dwarves, 3x3 rooms, fully furnished, and I get some more immunity to tantrum spirals.

Also barracks get their own Establishment combs, and nobles, 2/4s of one.

2x2 with bed, chair and table here, and I usually smooth and engrave everything when I've got too many lazy dwarves on my hands without a proper job to do.

When the economy kicks in, you'll probably need some crappy rooms for your peasants though, so that's where you break out the 1x1 capsule bedrooms with plain rock walls...
