Getting Tilesets to works on the mac
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:26:13 pm »

Edit: Success! Both GraphicConverter and Photoshop can convert images to WINDOWS Bit Maps.

I'm not sure if you could call it a bug but I couldn't find a post mentioning it so this seemed the best place to report it.

Any DF tutorial can tell you that to install a new tileset just download it, convert it to .bmp and change the address in the init.txt.

HOWEVER if your on a Mac DF won't read files identified as BMP but WILL read files that are windows bit maps. It took me two hours to figure this out.

I used a custom tileset I had downloaded as part of a larger packate that was windows bitmap and it worked fine. I opened it with an image editor (paint brush if it matters) saved it without making changes. Its identity changed from windows bitmap to BMP (according to the get info command) and was greeted by a black screen.

Could this be fixed?

This is more an issue with the Mac, not DF.
Mac labels things with the actual .BMP extension as "Windows bitmap" and .PICT (I think that's theirs...) as "BMP".
Everything here is talking about the extension, not the label.

Thanks for the info.

Do you know how I could format these to make them work? I've been messing around with their properties using the command line but so far no luck.

This is frustrating.

maydayMAx.bmp (downloaded as .bmp from web) works.
FlyingMage.bmp, which I downloaded as a .png and converted to .bmp using an image editor, does not.
Heres a command line comparison.

Obsidian:example alexh$ ls -l
total 480
-rw-r--r--@ 1 alexh  staff   44763 Mar  3 16:53 FlyingMage.bmp
-rw-r--r--  1 alexh  staff  196664 Nov 16 11:45 maydayMAX.bmp

All the extensions are .bmp. FlyingMage.bmp is undoubtedly a .bmp file. I converted it myself but the get info command shows that FlyingMage.bmp has "kind:Windows bitmap image" and FlyingMan.bmp as "kind:BMP". Its the same story for the rest of the tile sets I've downloaded. The ones that are .bmp's from a windows machine work fine. Anything I convert myself fails.

I guess the question is how do you make a "WINDOWS bitmap image" on a mac?

Well, I've been using Photoshop, which isn't an accessible tool for all, but it works like a charm.

Open your file, go to 'Save As', Format 'BMP', choose Windows, 24 bit. Just works.

Have you tried GraphicConverter? It's ancient and kludgy, but it's great at stuff like this.

Sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

I shall download GraphicConverter at once. If that fails I'm sure I have a copy of photoshop lying around here somewhere.
