Mega Challenges
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:25:10 pm »

I want to ask what challenges you have thought up, like are listed at http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Challenges

Mine:

The Tower of Plenty:

set your pop cap to something huge like 600.  Lock your starting 7 inside a tower and begin mass producing food and wealth.  Drop food from the tower and leave migrants alone to fend for themselves, forever.

Kobold Catcher:

Trap as many kobolds in cages as possible.

Freedom of Movement:

Create a map completely filled with up/down stairs, from the lowest to highest z levels.  build some rooms in the center and remove any meeting areas to let your dwarves roam in all 3 directions.  Wait for ambush and watch hilarity ensue.

The Seven Hills of Rome:

Generate a map with seven hills and a river, just like Rome.

Nickname two of your starting dwarves Romulus and Remus and found a historically accurate recreation of Rome.  Bonus points for having a civ with a wolf for a symbol, having Romulus kill Remus, or letting the goblins sack the town at appropriate times.

So lets hear your challenges!

I ended up finding out you can speed up pregnancies by changing the mother to a cat to knock them up and changing back before labor

The Underwater Vulcano

We see it all. Vulcans in vulcans, and forts inside of them, but do you dare to do the unimaginable?

Down the drain

Cover the whole landmass with automatic Retreacting bridges. Under the bridges provide tunnels/holes that all lead to one massiv Arena/Vulcan/Pit of Doom/Trap Collection/Sparring area.

Its the dwarfen way.

Build a automatic system of raising bridges that will catapult anything from point A to point B. Point B being a vulcan.

Make a scale model of New York City, with all the towers the right proportional size.
Bonus points for creating the twin towers and having them collapse

Dig out every stone, turn them into blocks, and methodically replace every single tile with a block of its original material. So leave those soil layers; they can't be replaced.

Damn you, cruel air-filled world!

After goblins began attacking me alongside the mandrills and random floods with carp in them, I have decided to dig a huge lake, build a castle at the bottom, and flood the lake. Every entrance will be guarded by tamed mandrills and megabeasts, and the waters above us will be clear, as we require a carp-pit to throw the prisoners from our above-ground excursions into.

Caves are for Kobolds
Create a house for every single dwarf, above ground, a REAL house. Like, two bedroom apartment with their own food stores and alcohol. Families must be stationed together. Factories must look like factories, roofs on every building, and remove the pop cap until your fps finally dies in your marvelous city.
Bonus points for killing off every dwarf at this point and reclaiming the city.

the Great Glacier Gala!

Embark on a glacier, make a huge bustling Ice fortress and become the envy of every civilization...

Magma can only be used to make water.
No Farmers (trade for food only).
No Rooms underground except for storage rooms.
Capture Polar bears and make the Polar Bear Dwarf Royal Cavalry! (PBDRC)

And once you have a bustling Ice Fortress...

Activate the magma pumps under the city, Collapsing your fortress into nothingness!

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

Bombs away!:
Roof over the sky, build a grid of holes with magma-proof hatches connected to levers into the roof, then pump magma up there. Whenever you are invaded (Or the Elf Caravan arrives) Pull the levers and try to drop columns of magma onto your victims. The trick is to predict where they will be when the magma reaches the ground!

"Yeah. My plan was to drop some kittens into the siege, and have my dwarves freefall into battle, landing on top of the kittens. The plan was kinda dumb though because the kittens were standing on grates, and the goblins killed them with arrows just as I was releasing the freefalling dwarves. So the dwarves weren't able to land on kittens and just fell and died."

Modification to this:
Orbital Bombardment
Roof over the sky. Construct a system on the underside of the roof that will collapse a construction anywhere on the map you desire.

Sushi Sushi!

Create a perfectly flat surface plane with your fortress entrance in the middle. The surface is a checkerboard of pressure plates and upright spike traps, with each pressure plate connected to 1/3 of the spike traps in an 8 tile radius chosen at random. How many gobbos can make it to your entrance alive?

Bonus if every dwarf becomes a legendary mechanic.

Double bonus if you can do it without an obsidian farm.

Go Go Gadget Gobbo Alternative

Replace the spike traps with drawbridges.

Veneration of Vucub Caquix:
Build a massive statue of precious metals and some glass in front of a deep, deep pit. Celebrate Seven Macaw, the impostor bird demon who brings eternal twilight to the world, by sacrificing children to him! Use retractable bridges and levers to dump children into the pit. Bonus points for having the bottom level be full of 4/7 water and vicious animals.

Castle in the sky

Make a Stairway tower that goes up 30 levels.
Build Fort there (of course with doom leaver).

Make various bridges that drop various things down, animals, nobels, captured enemys, whatever - until the ground is blood red on evry title.
Flood with magma.

The Temple of Trials

Capture as many hostile creatures that you can and put them in an underground labyrinth. Capture sieging armies with drawbridges for bonus points.

Every season/year send in one armed recruit into the dungeon. If he survives to make it to the other side then make him a royal tomb from adamantine, royal throne room, royal bedroom and royal dining room with perpetual waterfalls each.

Bonus points for every megabeast inside.

BIG bonus if the recruits emerge as champions.

BIGGEST bonus if the creatures are accidentally set loose and kill your fort.

Concentric Circles
With your first 7, build a fully functioning fortress. With the next immigrant wave, build another, surrounding the first, but completely separate. Continue doing this until you run out of room. Bonus points if you can fit this into a true circular design. Vast quantities if you can design it around a sphere.
