Its a pretty small link on the bottom of the table on the right side (in a stones article) so its easy to miss.

The "Stone" article has a Table for the "other stones" there their Articles are linked.

Nope.
Graphite is used in pencils, as chalk is useless for writing on paper.
You might be talking about something that looks like a chalk board.
I assume it looked like a slab of slate with a thin stick of slate tied to it

Actually I was refering to a handheld chalkboard... Not paper.

Using the Chalkboard means that they didn't need to use Paper.

I can't help but think that the mugs of chalk are the worst part.

It's the flux part that bothers me. Not one of the steel articles I could find mentioned flux other than limestone
They're practically the same thing.
Calcium Carbonate.
I think that chalk is supposed to be a newer rock.
(In geological terms, of course.)
Yeah, when ever I see an article about steel making, it normally mentions calcium carbonate.  Chalk fits the bill.

Why on earth would limestone be the only flux?  Chemically speaking, the stuff doesn't actually compose the steel.  It acts as a purifying agent.  Therefore, there should almost definitely be multiple substances that can be used.

Well if only one type of rock is ever mentioned, you have to wonder why

Perhaps because it's the most commonly used?  Seriously, using rock chalk for steel-making and for blackboard chalk?  That doesn't sound very realistic.  It could also be that the major areas in which steel developed or is produced are rich in limestone.  I should look into this at some point.

Or maybe the writer of said article felt like only mentioning one, or didn't know about others.  Another thing to consider is wording.  Did the article say something like "a flux like limestone?"  In such a case, limestone is just an example, not the sole flux.

Of course, you can also build things out of soap or, IIRC, ashes, so being able to build things out of chalk really shouldn't be much of a surprise ;)

That really ought to be fixed.  There should be more restrictions on what you can build stuff out of.  I know there are changes being made to the material raws in the next version, maybe there'll be some of those restrictions then.

Board chalk is made of gypsum these days.
It's less dusty or something.

I always imagined that burned building materials in DF results in the plant equivalant of tempered steel instead of grey dust.
