Can you really build with chalk?
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:33:31 am »

I was wondering this because it isn't unusual for my fortresses to have a lot of chalk.  Namely, they end up built on chalk.  Is this really a reasonable possibility?  Walls of chalk, floors of chalk, chairs of chalk, tables of chalk.  Even mugs of chalk.

Best/worst of all, since it's a flux material, it has a material value of 2.  So not only is use of chalk possible in every way in DF, it's desirable!  Does this make sense?  Is chalk fresh-from-a-quarry different than the stuff we usually think of as chalk?

Odd how "Experiment" in DF is often synonymous with "Raging inferno of death and dispair"

Don't mix blackboard chalk with rock chalk. What we write with is first pulverized, refined and then compressed into small sticks, making the resulting material softer and easily smeared on any surface. Rock chalk is rock. Hard, cold rock. You can still write with it, but not nearly as easily. I used to live in an apartment building near which all the asphalt roads, paths and patches where mixed with chalk pebbles and as a small child, I used those pebbles to write stuff on those roads and on walls. Unrefined chalk is a lot different from refined backboard chalk.

Happy endings certainly are possible in Dwarf Fortress.
Every Dwarf is allowed the sweet, sweet release of blissful death.
...
In fact its mandatory.

I asked this a couple years back, except about talc instead of chalk.

A reference to Wikipedia later, my face sure was red.  Turns out talc, the real-life mineral forms found in the game anyway, is NOTHING like the powdery stuff we use...

Chalk is actually pretty hard stuff. Perhaps not as hard as other rocks, but it is still possible to build a house out of it or something.
Fun fact: Practically the only rocks around here are chalk.

I know more about rocks now that I've played dwarf fortress then I ever thought I would.

There used to be a neat thread back before the board move where someone listed out all the rocks in DF, with pictures and descriptions.

We should do another one of those. Or at least have the DF wiki link to the wikipedia entries for each rock.

It's the flux part that bothers me. Not one of the steel articles I could find mentioned flux other than limestone

They're practically the same thing.
Calcium Carbonate.
I think that chalk is supposed to be a newer rock.
(In geological terms, of course.)

The romans built a massive ramp out of chalk in order to invade Masada.  It's still there.  At least, I think it was chalk.

I think both Masada itself and the ramp qualify as megaconstructions

Rock Chalk used to be used for Pencils I believe. (mostly because paper was EXPENCIVE!)

Though I may be wrong... it could have been regular chalk... but it seemed much harder then usual.

Nope.
Graphite is used in pencils, as chalk is useless for writing on paper.
You might be talking about something that looks like a chalk board.
I assume it looked like a slab of slate with a thin stick of slate tied to it.

Chalk paintings on paper can be very pretty. Most painting chalk is refined, colored and made softer.

This is the picture from the German Island "Rügen" which is almost entirly composed from chalk.

Or at least have the DF wiki link to the wikipedia entries for each rock.

The DF wiki does that already ;)
