DF gets kudos from Finnish computer magazine.
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:55:37 am »

The largest Finnish general magazine about computers and everything related, Mikrobitti (translated microbyte), releases a DVD every year containing a collections of programs of great help to computer users. Image editors, text editors, office packages, linux distros, web browsers.. the list goes on. They also include a selection of freeware games in various categories.

This years, DVD has just been released, as a free bonus to subscribers and buyers of the latest issue of the magazine. On it, under the section RPG:s, you will find, among Nethack and Adom; Dwarf Fortress!

The first sentence in the accompanying review says (my translation): "It's probably best not to beat about the bush and state, that Dwarf Fortress is a merciless game for beginners."  :D The review provides a link to the wiki to help with that.

So, perhaps a fresh influx of Finnish DF-players might be expected!

Finland is already one of the largest markets for DF, surprisingly. It rates very well in northern Europe in general overall.

Finns are the best.

I agree, especially because I love saunas...and as we all know...it's a Finnish invention!  ;D

I thought it was because dwarfs originated in that region?

If I wasn't English, I'd want to be Finnish.

Best racers in the world, best sniper that ever existed and, apparently, the best at killing Russians.

Holy hell, I need to make friends with that Finnish guy I know just to get some of that awesomeness rubbed off on me.

..and **** climate! I mean finns are "hardcore gamers" [..take a look at the Counter Strike scene, probably 1/2 of the finnish population is playing hours / day with that game  ;D] because of that.

Being a 3rd-Generation Finnish-American, I suddenly have an explanation for my addiction to hardcore gaming and/or Dwarf Fortress... it's in my blood!

I wonder if the magazine contacted the Adams Bros about it beforehand. Either way, Kudos on the publicity guys!

Freaky...I never thought I'd have a genetic bias towards DF. Live and Learn.

Somehow I feel that the black & situational humour appeals to the finnish mentality.

P.S: Sauna is an babylonian(Roman?) invention that rubbed on to the slavs and thru them to us(finns). We do still have a unique bathing "culture" associated with saunas tho.

Now I have a good excuse to go buy the magazine as I already got quite interested in it when I read it a few weeks ago.

I like these topics that show how many of us Finns really are here. Though the explanation for our great numbers is not found from the Finnish media. For example Finland's biggest gaming magazine, "Pelit" (Games) has yet to say a single word about DF.

Argh...

Well, Indonesia will be there...

longly

Especially now, as nearly all gaming males either play DoTA, one of the many Korean MMOs, or watch anime and play Touhou (like me).

Well, I'll try to adversite DF after the new release released (Ow my word-choosing ability sucks)

The best way I have seen to put the harshness of the game was "The learning curve is a Cliff Face."

I, unfortunately, am not a Finn.  I am frequently finished, but not a Finn.  :(

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

Yeah, I heard something along the same lines. I'd say it this way: "The learning curve is there, but instead of a slope there's a vertical cliff face that you have to climb, pursued by rising magma."
