What?  No, the story's 97% the same.  The only major omission is the "Scouring of the Shire".  Although I agree that the films are epic.  I'm listening to the soundtrack right now.  I think my favorite track is "The Riders of Rohan".

(edit to respond to below comment)  It's not that it's HARD, exactly, it's just that I don't find it enjoyable.  If I'm not enjoying a book and it's not for school, what's the point of reading it?
Sort of. They also missed the Barrow Wrights, Tom Bombadil, Gollum never made Sam leave....and others I cant think of....
.... the dead only helped Aragorn capture the black ships (not win the whole battle), an orc chieftain skewered Frodo in the mines, and Sam received blessed soil or somesuch from Galadriel not some salt or seasoning. The list goes ever on and on..

The only really important change, in my opinion, was the resolution of the Battle of Helm's Deep.  In the book, they basically just fight the orcs for a while, then run like pussies through the cave, and keep running until they... get to Isengard or something, it's been a while since I read it.

They mention that plan in the movie, but rightly conclude that the orcs would just catch and kill them anyway.  So, Aragorn and Gimli convince Theoden to fight their way out and meet Gandalf, and the orcs are defeated by The Power of Friendship and it turns into a whole triumph of the human spirit thing.  Personally, I thought it made a stronger narrative, and of course was more fun to watch.

I'm pretty sure Helm was an ancient leader of Rohan, I thought it was Harkenbrand or something like that.

Still a cool name.

In my mind, that badass ringwraith king guy shows up in the end of the book and grabs Frodo's ring before pushing him into the lava, and he takes it to Sauron. But then, while Sauron is giving his dramatic victory speech, Helm Hammerhand shows up and fucking knocks over Sauron's tower, and it lands on Elrond and all the elves and their fucking boats. And then he punches the ground and Mordor sinks into the depths of the earth, taking the ring with it. Hell yes.

ERKENBRAND! I HAVE FOUND IT!

You forgot. The witch king would be killed by hobbits while having the ring. Think of an Ultra Mighty, Super Tough, Perfectly Agile Adventurer, swarmed by children.

Ya know, I haven't watched the Movie Trilogy. One of the movies was on TV once, and I thought "Oh, I'll watch this for an hour and a half and then do something else"

Cut to three hours later.

"Why isn't this movie done yet?"

Me: dumb as a fucking doornail.

Well I don't know, since -like I've said- I did not read the books...but I remember that lot of LotR fans were complaining, that the movies are crap compared to the books.

Eh, they weren't bad.

I do miss the trees, though. After Helm's deep in the books the Trees come out and get revenge on the orcs for chopping down their friends. The whole road out of Helm's deep gets covered in trees, and all the orcs that go in vanish. It's pretty cool.
