Lord of the Rings
« on: March 02, 2009, 07:13:18 pm »

So, has anyone actually read and finished this trilogy? Everyone I know reads about 150 pages into it and gets bored. I find this sad, as this is my favorite book. What do you guys think of this?

Ohhh, and to anyone who plays LOTRSBG, War of the Ring looks okay.

I liked most of it, but I usually left in the midst of 'Sam, Frodo, and Smeegle walk through rocks" x 20 pages.

What most people cant get by are "Frodo + other hobbits sit in Shire" x like 200.

I read all of them, but probably skipped about 10% of it. Some parts, like when Tom Bombadil shows up and they're in spooky town talking to dead people are just so confusing and unreadable and filled with details you can't help but skip them.

The opening wasn't that bad. Short people live peacefully in Merry Old England? Smoking weed? I'd live there. Being taller than everybody would just be a bonus.

I stopped reading right before Helm's Deep. I thought it was going to be another chapter about them sitting around on a fucking boat or something. The fact that I stopped says something about the book, especially considering that I loved The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, which most people have even less of a chance of reading through.

You can probably imagine how cheated by fate I felt when I saw the second movie.

Ohh yeah. But the Battle of Minas Tirith is even cooler. Although less explosions.  :-[

The Silmarillion is a waste of time. People, please, just read the trilogy, lock it away into your closet, and hope you never open the closet again.

The Hobbit is better.

And yeah, The Silmarillion is a total waste of time.

I wouldn't say a total waste.  Tolkien really put a lot of detail into the world of Middle Earth, much of which isn't even used in either the Hobbit or LOTR, and the Silmarillion is a good place to get all that background info.
It doesn't really hang together as a single story very well, but there's a lot of interesting little tidbits here and there, such as the existence of the Blue Wizards, the making of Middle Earth, the creation of the Dwarves, etc.

Interesting brain droppings don't make for a story.  Tolkien didn't think the Silmarillion was a story.  He was right.

I tried reading the LOTR for a while.  I read like 95% of the first and second books but skipped a little.  Third book, I lost interest part way in.

Read all the way through at least 5 times over the past 10 years. The only part I found myself bored was the second part of Two Towers. I'm not sure why, but my favorite part is the first part of the Fellowship where they're heading for Rivendell.

I've made several attempts to get through the Silmarillion but have yet to succeed.

Read the trilogy and the Hobbit of course.  I only got a few dozen pages into the Silmarillion before I realized I was reading a very dry history appendix of a place that doesn't exist.  Bunch of crap about trees.

My biggest complaint about the trilogy was the way, somewhere around the Battle of Minas Tirith, Tolkien must of forgot he was not in fact writing a sequel to the Bible.  You're an English professor for God's sake, you're not supposed to start every sentence with "And".
