"Hey Legacy, can I speak to you for a moment?"
"Sure, go ahead. I'm not doing much at the moment," I said to our expedition leader.
"Well," diefortheswarm said, "it's been a year, and we have a nice little place carved out."
"That we do."
"But I think it's time for somebody else, especially with your sort of skills, to take over now. I'm exhausted, and I think you would be the perfect replacement."
"This is because I'm the only one not busy digging, isn't it?"
"...maybe."
"Alright, I'll do it. But when a year is up, we have an election to choose a new expedition leader. I don't want to sit around managing things when work needs to be done."
"Of course, of course."===
I walked into my new office, such as it was, as diefortheswarm showed me his setup for managing things. It was crude and sparse, but then, that's all that could be expected given what we have to work with. "Well," he said, "good luck. I'm going to go get drunk."
I looked over the maps and papers. I had one reaction:
What
The
FUCK
===
Well, it seems I have plenty of work to do. First, I need a new expedition leader. Unfortunately, we're stuck with a Champion. Ah well, that'll change when enough migrants get here. Caravans are ambushers' favorite targets, and I don't want half our military stuck in a liason meeting when the buggers show up.
For this reason, instead of the current expedition leader, I chose our mechanic to represent "me".
We have more room than we'll need anytime soon, if ever. When I took over, we had no farms, no still, no beds, no forges, no real defenses, nothing. Not even a water source. All we had was the mechanic's shop and empty space. I had no choice but to cancel the mining designations and set up farms and a still ASAP.
Since we have
four fucking miners, Dwarf Manager simply wouldn't cut it. We need job diversity, and we need it now. I've given everybody custom profession names to help keep them straight.
Food and booze:
'diefortheswarm' Shemezum and Nomal Tekkudneth, Mine/Food. I set up a farm plot, a still, and two food stockpiles (one for seeds only) in one of the big blocks. We need booze, and FAST.
Beds and other wooden stuff:
Sarvesh Urmimsazir, Mine/Wood. Set up a carpenter's workshop and deconstructed the wagon for the three logs. We need at least a couple beds.
Trade and Defense:
'Legacy' Italkogan, Stone/Bone. I'll handle everything that involves turning stone and refuse into stuff. We need a couple tables and chairs, plus we might need some miscellaneous other masonry. I set up a fuckload of traps, and I set up a craftsdwarf's shop for him to churn out mugs for trade and gear for our troops. I also made a refuse stockpile for the shells and bones near it.
Forges:
Nil Alathteshkad, Mine/Metal. We need a cistern until we can tap the brook and I need to dig a route to the magma so that we can make an axe. I then need somebody to make said axe when he gets there.
EVERYBODY got food hauling and refuse hauling.
Further, I set up some hotkeys:
Shift-F1 is the trade depot and entry hall. To the west of it is the farm.
F3 is the crafting area.
Shift-F3 is the current forge area.
Don't worry, they're labeled if you bring up the hotkey menu.
