Do you have cave-ins enabled? If you do, then the game probably considers the tree to be a solid object the floor can attach to, and since the tree itself shouldn't be able to collapse, it acts as a floating anchor. I don't know if that's true, but it's likely what's happening if you do have cave-ins enabled.

Every time I've mined out all the tiles above and around a tree, I got a cave in.

Sounds like you have cave-ins disabled, to me.

Sounds like he either has cave-ins off or didn't mine out the tile around the tree.  He only said underneath, not around.

aww, here i was already making plans for a floating fortress, anchored to trees.

think of them as peahats in Zelda.

Yup, sounds like cave-ins are disabled or the tile isn't completely mined out.

I know when I'm doing digging around the surface I have to make sure the woodcutters have cleared the area first, or else its very easy for miners to be injured or killed by a collapse.
